      There is a town called the gateway to dovedale
      and early every year
      men gather in the greenman bar
      and drink there rum and beer
      they play a game of football there
      they play it through the streets
      the men they are a rugged croud and very hard 2 beat
      shrove tuesday and ash wednesday
      theys dates there always set
      to play that game of football
      through sunshine snow or wet
      all barryers broken, religions, races 2
      to try n reach that wondurouse ball red, white n blue
      its sumtimes up, n its sumtimes down
      as they fight there through the streets
      and nitha of them will give way or ever show defeat
      the day goes on and the night bares cold
      slowly they leave the town
      to fight threw hedgerows, sludge n brook
      till tht mill here is found
      then out of dirty pockets
      a coin is sumtimes tossed
      men walk away, no luck tht day
      for the game is lost
      the victor, he rejoyces
      his friends stand by his side
      with a ball tuckd under his arm
      into ashbourne town they stride
      they gather in the greenman barr
      and tales are told that nyt
      of ashbourne shrovetide football
      who won, who lost the fight
      so dont decry r ancient game
      and never show defeat
      let us c r childerens childeren
      play shrovetide in the street
