Affectations/Ego & Id
I am...a mum of three children, content without becoming complacent, getting older gracefully, painfully shy, cheeky and dry-witted when shyness is overcome, very well read, horribly forgetful, have a wretched work history but excellent work ethic, a student of the arts, a smoker that doesn't smoke anymore, a sensualist, tenacious, living with my foot in my mouth (not literally, eww), an excellent specimen of why trite addages warn against curiosity and an even better example of the satisfaction promised by them...
Website of the Week
One of my all time favorite places to loiter online:
http://www.crimelibrary.com/
I don't recommend reading things on this website at night. Indeed.
Happiest When
With my Children. ~smile~
Bookish Recommendations
The Little Prince ~ Antoine de Saint-Exupery,
Zen Flesh, Zen Bones ~ compiled by Paul Reps,
The Complete Tales and Poems of Whinnie-the-Pooh ~ A.A. Milne,
The Giving Tree ~ Shel Silverstien,
Ishmael ~ Daniel Quinn,
Anything by Roald Dahl
And my newest favorite is 30, 000 Years of Art ~ a seriously enormous book that is a Feast of Fantasy for the eyes.
A thought:
I love a quiet day after the Christmas holiday. I love a quiet day after <s>the Christmas</s> any holiday. I love a quiet day <s>after</s> any <s>holi</s>day.

The conclusion to Paul Harvey's noon report on Tuesday, read in his humorous monotone:

<blockquote>And now, for what its worth...researchers in Marseille, France are re-restudying Napoleon's disastrous retreat from Russia. Remember I mentioned the other day the new theory which has surfaced? Dental pulp extracted from the teeth of Napoleon's buried soldiers reveals much typhus and/or trench fever spread through the grand army by lice...spread by lice. Well at least now Historians know what the little corporal was doing with that one hand tucked inside his waistcoat...

He wah he wah he wah (laughter) He was scratching.</blockquote>

Paul Harvey picks a bit of fun, but neglected to say:

<blockquote>Napoleon marched into Russia in the summer of 1812 with 500,000 soldiers.

Only a few thousand staggered out again, victims of war, weather, and disease.

Twenty-five thousand arrived in Vilnius that winter, but only 3,000 lived to continue the retreat. The dead were buried in mass graves. Construction work in 2001 unearthed one such grave, containing between 2,000 and 3,000 corpses.
    (from <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/health/45..." target="_blank">BBC's Lice 'undermined Napoleon's army'</a>)

And that 29% were probably infected with typhus or trench fever, based on a sampling of 72 teeth.</blockquote>

Doing a little research about the actual event...I really didn't feel at all amused anymore. War rarely amuses me.

  • Burned. Again.

I burned my hand yesterday, right on my knuckles with the top element of my oven. I've burned myself I don't know how many times.

What I didn't realize until now is that you have to keep your hand under the bitterly cold tap water until your whole hand is aching to stop a burn like that. Usually I give it a couple seconds and then deal with horrible burn feelings in my skin, trying to sooth it with ice or melaleuca oil (the oil does help stop the burning).

Moral being...Trade a little pain now for a lot later.

  • Beware of The Cute

    Dear Casey, Bri, and Kelly...

I left you pretty pictures. I would like it noted that I do realize you are no longer three years old and the pictures are probably not to taste. I am sure this is just a stage and I will quit drawing nauseatingly cute things soon.

    Love,
    ~Aunt Annie
