Good evening Ms. Cogan, Ms. Campbell, Fr. Dan, teachers, fellow
classmates, parents, relatives and friends. It is both an honour and a
privilege to have been chosen by the class of 2008 to address you tonight on
Our journey in Beaufort began six years ago, back in September 2002.
103 quiet, nervous girls, too shy to ask what the difference was between
a prefect, form teacher and year head. Needless to say, that all changed
once we settled down! We tested our boundaries and our teachers’ patience
with a variety of well-thought-out schemes and tricks. Our BUBBLY
personalities truly began to shine! All this fun encouraged new friendships
and laid the foundation for what was to be an incredible six years.
By second year, we had settled into our school routine. At home,
however, the war continued as suddenly our parents’ little angels began the
dreaded journey into adolescence, which in our eyes, gave us the right to go
to every disco and wear what we liked....much to our own expense!
Third year was quite a landmark in our journey. The Junior Cert was
somewhat of a catalyst, hurrying on our maturing process. Our trips abroad
and our shared terror of our first state exams brought our year together and
strengthened our friendships.
In fourth year, our new-found closeness and strength was put to the test
as one of our friend’s journeys came to a sudden and unexpected end.
Losing Lynsey was the greatest trial many of us have faced in our lives. Her
huge personality, remarkable positivity and determination were suddenly
missing from our classrooms and corridors, but her energetic spirit managed
to find its way into our hearts and gave us the strength we needed to
continue on our own journeys. Lynz is an ever-present companion and friend
to each of us as we continue on our paths. And as we graduate tonight, I am
sure that she is graduating alongside us. With amazing support from all our
teachers and staff, transition year turned out to be thoroughly enjoyable.
Our production of “My Fair Lady” was a massive success and left many
students swooning when they caught a glimpse of Professor
Higgins on her way to class! Alton Towers was possibly the most eventful
two days of our time in Beaufort....not only did we brave some of the
scariest roller coasters in Europe, but we also managed to avoid a hospital
trip thanks to two unknown superheroes!
After all that excitement, it was tricky settling back down to work in fifth
year. It seemed that all we had on our horizons was homework, tests and
study. But as always, we still managed to have fun! Our circles of friends
grew wider and a close bond developed between ourselves and both the
year ahead of us and below us.
In September 2007, we arrived back to school confused at our own
reflections. Navy jumpers?! We couldn’t believe (and many of us still can’t
believe) that we had reached the final stage of our journey in Beaufort. The
looming threat of the Leaving Cert has never left our minds, but it hasn’t
stopped us having an absolute ball! Our awesome talent show, our
victory in the Leinster Cup, our fun filled spirit week, our mysterious pre-
debs and the countless 18ths have all made our final year truly
unforgettable. And we ensured that Beaufort won’t forget us in a hurry by
the copious amount of yellow hand-prints dotted around the first year
Its funny thinking back of the perception we once had of sixth years.
They were adults. Mature, wise ladies in navy socks. I don’t think any of us
noticed the change. It wasn’t one specific point of transformation, but it
was a gradual journey, a progression into the people we are today, guided
by our teachers and parents. To our teachers, thank you for not giving up on
us even when it had seemed that we had given up on ourselves, for th
