2006 - The Long Awaited, Critically Acclaimed, Top Notch SUMMARY OF THE YEAR.....
2006 - An eventful year in many ways, whether your highpoint was watching Italy win the world cup, witnessing George Bush making - yes, wait for it - even MORE of a twat out of himself, or closely following the intense romance of Preston and Chantelle as the drama unfolds over a series of tabloids and badly-dubbed live reality t.v., I think it is fair to say the last twelve months have been very interesting.
For me, this year brought a lot of surprises, and in the next few paragraphs I will proceed to describe some of the events which glued together to form.....
THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND THE UGLY OF 2006:
The Legend That Is Oliver Richter - Ambulance Case #1
Having travelled up from London with three friends following the Subways on their UK tour, Ollie had seen them play in Glasgow, and come to Edinburgh for the day, expecting an easygoing afternoon. Little did he know his life was about to take a dramatic twist......
Starbank park seemed like a good location to relax and have a few beers, and as everyone sat around, an interest began to rise in the steep, steep slope and a nearby bike. Maybe it was the beer, maybe it was the sun. Maybe it was the enormous amount of peer pressure and "egging on" involved in the situation, but somehow Ollie was persuaded to put two and two together, and the next thing we knew, he was perched at the top of the slope on the bike.
From then, there was only one clear way to go, and as Ollie set off down the hill, the rest of the park watched in stunned silence. I remember seeing it almost in slow motion. The bike gaining a lot of speed in a very short amount of time, shouting "Ollie! put your hands on the brakes!", and then gasping as I watched the horrific stunt unfold. As the bike reached the steepest drop of the hill, both wheels took to the air with a certain grace that cannot be described in a mere blog. The landing, however, was quite different. The front wheel was first to hit the ground, and as Ollie slid forwards on the bike, it continued to move, and he was flung off, managing to create contact between his head and a nearby tree as he landed. I won't go into detail about the concussion, all I'm saying is that Ollie was not aware of what country he was in, or the reason for him being there. Naturally, an ambulance was called and Ollie was assesed by paramedics. He is now fully recovered, but a small chunk off grass still remains out of place in Starbank park that will always remind us of that fateful day.
The Clown That Is Louis Peto Grant - Ambulance Case #2
It has to be said that swordfighting with large sticks on top of a steep, muddy embankment on Edinburgh's infamous walkway is possibly not one of the greatest ideas ever thought of, but at the time, responsible decisions were not a high priority for the five teenagers involved on that cold Winter's day that lead to the serious injury of one specific boy. This boy could, of course, only be one person. Louis.
As we happily bashed the living daylights out of each other with the remains of several small trees, the idea came up that we should race to the bottom of the hill. It's hard to emphasize how steep this hill actually was, but in mathematical terms i can estimate it was roughly 5-7 metres long at an angle of about 45 degrees. In addition to this, the soil on the slope was like a marsh from the legendary Scottish weather we all love so much, and was already beginning to resemble a landslide.
Not being one to miss out, Louis seized the opportunity and ran straight down the swampy embankment, ineviteably falling and landing half-conscious on the path below. Of course, we were worried, but as Louis came to we began to see the funny side. I clearly remember him asking us what had just happened, and if we had filmed it. When we told him what he had just done, and informed him that we hadn't actually been sick enough to film it, he insisted on performing this wonderful trick again.
