- I was a bit of a late starter with bands. It just passed me by, even though when I was at school bands like Nirvana and Oasis were around. Looking back, I remember people being into them, but at the time I was in another world. And then, at 16, 17, I heard The Smiths and a whole new world opened up. I suppose obsessed would be the right word - not in a morbid way. It broke my heart when I realised they had split up 12 years previously. After discovering The Smiths, I followed the trail back to The Buzzcocks and I was well into The Only Ones - melodic bands who had a bit of a dirty sound. And then New York Dolls - I fell in love with them - and The Stooges. The driving aggressive stuff that I like is the English punk and the New York era. Carl's [Carl Barat, The Libertines' other singer] more the metal side of it - he was into Rage Against the Machine and Iron Maiden when he was a kid.

- Drugs
- To be honest, I've said it before, no one comes up to me asking for a crack dealer's number. People come up to me to talk about lyrics, about music, about the band. I don't get people coming up to me asking where they can get drugs, d'you understand?
I'm not saying that maybe there isn't a kid out there whose behavior hasn't been influenced by me in some way. I'm sure there is. But I can only speak for myself, and if you'd asked if my behavior had ever been affected by people I'd admired from afar, like musicians or footballers, that'd be yes, totally. Right down to their hand gestures. - Scared Of
- Some days. I mean, take today for example. I stepped out the door, and this white van pulled up, yeah? And this fella shouted out, "Pete, Pete, Pete, oy, Pete! And, yeah, mate ... it's great to meet you. Listen, uh, it's a bit cheeky, but my son, he's a great fan of yours. D'you reckon you can phone 'era up?" So they give me the phone and dial his son's number, and his son answered, and I said, "Hello?" And he said, "Hello?" I said, "Yeah, um, is that Ian?" He said, "Yeah." I said, "Listen, your dad just put me on the phone with you." He said, "Who is that?" I said, "Pete Doherty." He said, "What do you want?" And that was that. But the point is, mix your drinks, and it's best not to cry over spilt milk, but put it back in the bottle.
