  • Limerick v Meath 19th July 2008 in Limerick

    Sublime Ryan downs Meath
    Jul 20, 2008

    Saturday, July 19.

Limerick turned the form books on its head when sending Meath crashing from this year’s All-Ireland senior football championship.

Last season’s semi-finalists were no match for a fiercely determined Limerick side that had Ian Ryan as a match winner. The 19-year-old finished with a personal tally of 3-7.

    All-Ireland SFQ: Limerick 4-12 Meath 4-3

Up nine points at half time, Limerick signaled their intent not to crumble when Ryan completed his hat-trick inside three minutes of the restart.

Midfielder John Galvin scored Limerick’s fourth goal in the game’s 51st minute.
Meath finally got off the mark in the second half after 23 minutes when Brian Farrell goaled.

Then two minutes later, Joe Sheridan added a second goal followed by another soon after, Sherdian scoring from the penalty spot this time to make it 4-11 to 3-3.

Remarkably, Farrell then added his second goal as Limerick tired, but ultimately held on for a famous win.

Backed by a strong wind, Limerick were 2-6 to 0-3 ahead at half time against a stunned Meath.

And, that’s despite kicking seven first half wides – Meath registered two.

Meath were first of the mark with a Cian Ward point but then Limerick took over.
The procession of scores was boosted by a Ryan penalty on 10 minutes after Michael Crowley was dragged down. Six minutes later came the second goal – again from Ryan.

Jim O’Donovan’s attempted point came back off the upright and Ryan was on hand to finish from a tight angle.

Ger Collins and Michael Crowley (free) added scores and Limerick were 2-3 to 0-1 ahead after 20 minutes.

Farrell ended 18 minutes without a Meath score and Cian Ward notched his side of the first half, but again Limerick stormed back.

Ryan finished the half with three points, two from play, for a nine-point interval lead.
