- How well do you know Joey C? 3 Taken
Since the opening in 1985 of the Hash Marihuana Hemp Museum in Amsterdam, almost a million interested people have visited this permanent exhibition. Each year, some 95,000 visitors from all parts of the world come to this exceptional centre of culture and knowledge, located at 148 Oudezijds Achterburgwal in the heart of the Red-Light District. As its name suggests, the Museum is dedicated to the cannabis plant and its many uses. The Hash Marihuana Hemp Museum is unique in the world, and offers a true voyage of discovery - one that fits perfectly with any visit to Amsterdam.
The scent of genuine cannabis plants welcomes the visitor when entering the Museum. Inside, all aspects of hemp, cannabis and hashish are explained in detail using a variety of media, including short films and photo collections. The Museum houses a large collection of traditional smoking devices from all over the world. There is also an extensive library of books, photos, posters, and magazines concerned with the culture of cannabis, which range from the 19th Century to the Jazz era and on to contemporary pop culture.
The Hash Marihuana Hemp Museum offers visitors extensive documentation and information about the historical and modern uses of the cannabis plant, as well as its medicinal, religious and cultural applications, not to mention cannabis‘ enormous potential to benefit the environment, agriculture and industry in the future. The Museum shows how hemp has evolved to become one of humanity‘s most valuable renewable resources.
The Hash Marihuana Hemp Museum is currently in the process of gaining permission to relocate to 130 Oudezijds Achterburgwal. In the new building, it will be possible to admire many more fascinating cannabis exhibits — rare paintings and prints depicting cannabis throughout history and objects such as the various tools and implements used over the centuries to make hemp into rope, paper and fabrics. The large art collection contains works by David Teniers the Younger, Cornelis Decker and Adriaen van Ostade. It also includes modern canvases by Piet Mondrian and others.
Anyone interested in cannabis can enjoy the Museum to their heart‘s content and we would like to remind patrons that the exhibition is situated entirely on the ground floor, which gives wheelchair users easy access. The souvenir shop offers a wide variety of articles, such as bags, purses and cosmetic products made of hemp. Cannabis plants in their different stages of development can be admired in an indoor garden.
Although cannabis is considered controversial in many places of the world, the Hash Marihuana Hemp Museum aims to provide an objective picture of this remarkable plant. It is to be expected that scientists will discover many more uses for the cannabis plant. At the museum, visitors will be able to gain a deeper insight into all of this, because a visit will bring a wealth of information. In the Hash Marihuana Hemp Museum, the past, present and future of the cannabis plant are merging together.

Marijuana has been used for thousands of years in a therapeutic capacity, and lately its healing properties have been championed by those who wish to see the drug legalised. While its toxicity is still a source of controversy, some benefits of the drug’s use have been noted in medical journals and books, with a large positive attribute in its favour – so far, death by marijuana overdose is unheard of. That’s a startling contrast with any other drug, including common non-prescription medications that are easily available such as paracetamol and aspirin.
One effect marijuana can have is to increase alpha-wave activity in the brain. These waves are associated by neuroscientists with states of relaxation and meditation, suggesting the drug has a calming influence, and can be used to combat stress.
Other conditions that marijuana can improve include nausea and poor appetite. This can be particularly effective when associated with other serious conditions such as AIDS or cancer, where weight loss is a problem. The so-called ‘munchies’ effect of cannabis is sometimes quite desirable for sufferers of such diseases.
Famously marijuana is used for its pain-relieving properties, and while critics often argue that is simply an excuse for its abuse and common painkillers should supersede it, science shows that the ingredients in cannabis work as an analgesic, and can at times enhance the pain-relieving effect of opiate medicines, allowing these potent substances to be administered in lower doses. The condition Multiple-Sclerosis, which causes spasms and pain in the muscles, is now often treated with marijuana, due to studies showing it significantly reduces pain in sufferers. Scientists are beginning to believe that the drug is so effective because it in some way shields the nerves from the kind of damage MS traditionally does.
A further specific disease, gluacoma, is also thought to be treatable with marijuana. The condition causes pressure on the eyeballs, which can eventually lead to blindness, but in the 1970s scientists discovered that smoking marijuana decreased that pressure.
Despite these notable benefits, marijuana remains illegal in many areas of the world, and is considered by the United States to be a significant danger, a drug “with no recognised medical use”. There is still much resistance to its endorsement as a therapeutic drug, and there are legal alternatives to each application, though some may have more significant side effects or become less effective as time goes on.
