About Me

Me, Myself, and I
Uhh...Well, I'm a 23 year old violist from Scotland. Having just graduated from the Royal Academy of Music, I'm looking forward to a relatively chilled summer before I go back to start my Postgrad.

I live in South London in my lovely flat and have some very cool friends. When I'm not practicing, I can be found hanging out with them or teaching violin to kids which I love.
Music
Classical: Bach, Clarke, Shostakovitch, Walton, Beethoven and lots of other stuff
Popular: Kooks, Keane, Hard-Fi, Killers, Scissor Sisters, Muse (going to see them in September!) and Razorlight. I could go on but it'd get boring
Films
Hmm...Spirited Away, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (the new one), Pirates of the Carribean. Gosford Park, Robots, The Incredibles, and some others that I can't think of right now...
Sports
Watching yes, playing, you've got to be kidding! I'm taking part in the London Bikeathon for Leukaemia Research in July so cycling is now a feature of my life, preferably avoiding car wing mirrors. Any rugby union game going and, scarily, the world cup. What's wrong with me?!!
TV
Loving my Sky tv! Not been watching much telly recently, but I'm a fan of American Choppers and Deadliest Catch on Discovery.
Happiest When
Spending time with my friends, listening to/playing music or cooking but not when washing up

  • mortgages are scary

Ok, while I totally agree with my dad that, given how much it costs to rent in London I'd be far better off buying a flat. However, he never mentioned the joys of solicitors, mortgage brokers or estate agents. My solicitor is very nice but totally unhelpful. I don't doubt that she's very good at her job but doesn't tell me anything like how long things will take, always useful when you become homeless in 2 weeks!

Mortgage brokers: "you can't get a mortgage because you're a musician". No problem if I was a lawyer, medic, anything but a musician. Terrific! Plenty of ways round it but not what you want to hear.

And estate agents. Once your survey is booked the property is taken off the market. Hmm....that would be why someone else put in a higher offer after my survey was booked then. Not an entirely true statement me thinks.

In spite of all these moans, I'm actually very excited about owning my flat, which I think is lovely.:D It does mean I sound like my mother (?!) talking about furniture and dishwashers but it's a small price to pay. I would just like the process prior to moving in to be slightly less stressful.

  • It's too darn hot! (and why can't people reply to emails?!!)

It's far too hot. Now, I know I shouldn't complain, it's sunny for a change and it's not raining. Problem is, I wish it would. Not just rain, a nice proper thunder storm. I'd give anything for a night without tossing and turning because my house is the temperature of a turkish bath! On top of being fair skinned and rubbish with hot weather, I'd never realised how exhausting organising other people can be. Trying to get replies to meetings, getting the replies after you've made all your plans, only to have to unmake them and reschedule the whole thing. It's actually quite stressful. As a result of this, I've almost missed by tube stop both ways every day because I've fallen asleep and have to write reminders to make sure I eat. Somewhere in amongst the pandemonium I would love to take a day off and, you've guessed it, sleep. Maybe after welfare training. I can barely remember what day it is. Training just isn't happening, which is bad cos it needs to. 10 miles by the beginning of September. It is possible, but only if I can stay awake long enought to tie my shoe laces!!
