  • Wrapping up the best road trip EVER!!!Please pass me the anti depressants....

To wrap up our time together in Australia, Lana and myself decided that some good quality girlie time was well needed and seeing as though Elliott needed to return to rescue his business (and earn some more cash), shopping, cake eating, partying, beaching and more shopping was going to be the agenda for our last two weeks together.

In the first week, we took a days trip along the Great Ocean Road, which is famous for being one of the Worlds more spectacular coastal drives. Every turn and bend reveals another amazing view, but its when you get to the shipwreck coast (which got its name from the treacherous waters that many ships and crew were lost to) that you see some of the best examples of natural erosion with the 12 apostles, London Bridge and Loch Ard Gorge.

The rest of the weeks events included a visit to Captain Cook's cottage (for those of you that failed history, he discovered Australia), the old jail where the notorious Ned Kelly (Australia's biggest criminal) was imprisoned and hung, and many many many trips to some of Melbourne's wicked boutiques to do some serious spending damage.

To add to the chaos, at the end of week one we were joined by another compulsive shopper-our friend Marie....whoever said a traveller shouldn't shop needs to have a rethink of their priorities...we have all come to decide to is perfectly feesable-you just need to shop "harder" to find the bargins!!

So during week 2 we stepped it up a gear and went out on the town to one of Melbournes most happening nightclubs-an old revamped post office!!! We also arguably had our best night in Australia and all met one of our life long idols.....Harold "Jelly Belly" Bishop on the world famous Neighbours night!!!

So imagine 200 british backpackers rammed into an English pub, three neighbours stars, plus Dr Karl Kennedy's band and a trivia quiz! The whole event is rather cheesy but a must do-we were all surprised as to how much fun it turned out to be.....firstly Dr Karl is hot (for an old dude) and he can sing! In fact his band was really good (and no this is not the free champagne talking!). They played lots of current music including kaiser chiefs and the killers mixed in with some old classics like queen and bonjovi. The best song was their own rendetion of "who the f*ck is susan" he still doesn't know what he wants bless him. Harold on the other hand was a big fat perv......but are you really that surprised? He is not a church going, tuba playing samaritan but he "does have a mouth organ you can blow on" his words not ours! All in all a pretty surreal night with lots of laughter, and for those of you who were wondering about the quiz.....put it this way we didn't even come 5th, despite the "dance-off" round standing on our chairs! We would like to take this opportunity to thank our long distance cyber geek friend Davros for all of his help with the answers via text. Baby if you're wondering what went wrong, your answers were all right, it was simply our inability to match them up with the right question number in time to hand in the frickin answer sheets. They had us under some serious pressure, the gits!

We decided one last road trip was in order, so off we went again to the Great Ocean Road to the little seaside town of Torquay. We spent the day at the beach diving through the waves and watching kids learn how to surf. We had arranged to hook up with some surfer dudes in the evening (don't worry not randomers but friends we had already made) for barbie, beer and a surf yarn. Well, that was before we saw the state of the bbq and opted for good old fish and chips. The house was not the cleanest i have ever been in, in fact you name the spot, there was an ant or 200 on it! Lets just say, it took a couple of glasses of wine to get past the ant infestation and accept their kind invitation to stay the night. It was lovely to experience how real surfers live....with minimal worries, expenditure and cleanliness.....its all about livi

  • Don't do drugs kids.....

Next stop was Byron Bay, which is lovely little chilled out town with a cool lighthouse up on the cliff over looking the bay. Little tip though if you do go, book your accommodation in advance as it is a very popular place...We ended up in this hippie hostel where most people were sleeping in broken hamocks outside. Ell nearly lost all his last remaining will to live when they told us the only room they had left was ONE with a lovely double ensuite for him and his b***h and me and Marie in bunk beds about 4 feet away. We visited a great Tapas restaurant to celebrate...I don't actually remember what actually...maybe that we were out of Surfers, and had dinner and cocktails on the balcony...Ell was surrounded by drunken girls again! And it’s not like he could escape us when we got home either.

We had our first surfing lesson the next day (or should I say we were knocked sideways by the waves). We got caught in the biggest rain storm whilst out in the ocean, it was amazing…that is until the rain became more like hale and actually felt like pebbles being pelted at you left right and centre. We had to finish early and leg it back to the surf dude van (ever tried running up a beach with a giant surf board in hand!) absolutely drenched and freezing to listen to the remainder of the Bob Marley album with our cowabunga style surf coaches who were so monged out I reckon they actually thought they were ski instructors. Definitely a day we will never forget. I managed to stand 5/6 times and really loved it-I just kept on getting smashed by waves but just kept on getting back on and trying and trying...so yeah...looked like a bit of a spacco but had a ball!!

Us girls also went to a great Hippie fair in the country, near Nimbin. We couldn’t put Elliott through this one! There were loads of great market and food stalls with hippies running around stoned (check out my pics)-it was just like what you imagine the 70s to be about...loads of "free love" and dred wearing peaced out fellows dancing to bongo drums and I'm sure believed John and Yoko should actually run the country. Really amusing and yet somewhat surreal to watch. It was a lovely girlie day, plus we bagged ourselves some delicious free pineapple as the guy was too thick to work out the difference between a one dollar and two dollar coin. We gave him the right money and he gave us it right back as “change” Don’t do drugs kids, you end up out of it and poor! After, we couldn’t resist a “trip” to Nimbin to purcahse some of their local "produce"....This place is famous for one thing and one thing only!.... Everyone is stoned, and I mean everyone, which myself and Lana found out when we tried asking one guy for directions! This dudes head was rolling back and fourth, and you couldn’t distinguish between his words, everything kind of sounded like one long word! As soon as we walked away we looked at each other as if to say “did you get that?” and proceeded to fall about laughing, when we looked up this guy walked in front of us holding his shoes in his hands, each eye facing in a different direction. That was our cue to get in the car and drive the hell out of there! We had become real surf dudes!

  • A hormonal description on Brisbane and Surfers

Brisbane....I would go as far to say is Bo**ox. And while we are slateing certain areas of Australia...if you pop down the road to the supposidly "amazing" Surfers Paradise is a s**t hole too.

    So lets start with Brissy....

Lana and myself were becoming seriously worried that El's testosterone
levels were just about at rock bottom having been surrounded by girls 24/7 for 6 weeks. What just about topped it was him asking me for a eye brow shape (Ok...quite normal nowadays) but then a pedicure WITH clear polish so his feet looked nice in his new flip flops.

A manly, boy devoted day was definatly in order so we all purchased tickets to watch Freddy Flintoff's boys take on the Kiwis.

I suppose I better paint the whole picture..lets face it-cricket isn't the most hairaising sport going is it??? So in my opinion the atmopshere at big matches and the crowd "participation" is a huge part of the event itself. Unfortunatly the atmosphere was a bit flat to say the least. There was a half filled stadium with little crowd entertainment and nothing like I had experinced at the Ashes in Sydney or El had seen back in the UK- so you actually have to just ...well...enjoy cricket!!!

    Which me and El do.

After 15 minutes of watching the match Miss Alana Phillips was on the verge of tears of boredom, had decided cricket was the most pointless and boring sport ever and could quite easily murder all of its fans...right there and then!! El started getting out his digrams and cricket for beginners handbook but it was no good....we had lost her.

To quote her dramatic exit...."This is like pulling my eylashes out" and with that was gone and returned a good few hours later to se the last over or 2. Well done for trying Lan, well done.

The rest of our time in Brisbane was spent....not joking here...getting out of its one way system. Brisbane council...if your reading this...sort it the hell out and while your there start printing maps that done lie. Cheers.

We then jetted down to Surfers Paradise picking up Marie on route (despite Els attempts to "forget her")!!! In my opinion "Surfers" is best described as being a mix of Miami and Magaluf- with oodles of high rise building and overated beaches rammed with 18 year olds. However the one really great thing about Surfers was that it was at this beach where we experienced our first "washing machine" effect otherwise known as the sinus drainage manover). This is where you aim to dive through the middle of the 7ft wave (just like the Ozzie chic next to you who looks like a model after completion), but instead you somehow find yourself on your back, half way down the beach, bikini bottoms round your ankles, tops round your ears, giant boogers hanging out your nose and a FIT lifeguard pelting it over to you to check your still conscious.

And to top it off-we were still holding out on those Brazilian waxes!! Oh dear.

    Over and Out,

    Fish Lips Down Under
