About Me

Me, Myself, and I
Hello there. Jim's the name and I'd like to welcome you to my page. I hope you enjoy your stay. I'm going to try to keep this page updated but I'm really crap at things like that...
I live in Edinburgh and I'm now single after Eleanor and I sadly broke up. I work for the council which isn't exactly what I dreamt I'd be doing as I approach my 30th birthday. But it's better than being unemployed. I used to work as a journalist and I'd like to be a writer if my movie/tv/music soaked brain can come up with an original idea at some point.
While I'm up here, my family live south of the border. Mum and Dad live near Ipswich but not for much longer with a move to the North East of England imminent. My little brother Michael is scaring people near Ipswich. My sister Sarah is a teacher near Derby and I'm now an uncle after Sarah's son Jack was born in October.
Life is bound to get better and I'm in no hurry to leave Edinburgh just yet.
Music
Flaming Lips, Arcade Fire, Oasis, Arctic Monkeys, The Beatles, Radiohead, Stevie Wonder, Stone Roses, Super Furry Animals, Badly Drawn Boy, Nirvana, Foo Fighters, Muse, The Strokes, Kasabian, Rolling Stones, The Who, Franz Ferdiand, White Stripes, Kings of Leon, David Bowie, The Go! Team, REM, Happy Mondays...
Films
Jaws, Rear Window, Raiders of the Lost Ark, Aliens, Empire Strikes Back, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, The Shining, Kill Bill, The Princes Bride, Rushmore, Goodfellas, Anchorman, Godfather 1 and 2, The Royal Tenenbaums, Withnail and I, Amelie, Shaun of the Dead, Fight Club, Clerks, Serenity, Dawn of the Dead (original and remake), The Birds, Magnolia, Toy Story 1 and 2, Halloween, Pan's Labyrinth, Borat, Grosse Pointe Blank, Chinatown, Die Hard. I could go on for a while.
Sports
Football obviously. Liverpool are my team through thick and (mostly) thin. But I also like basketball, tennis, and table tennis. I play them all with varying degrees of competency. Except for table tennis. I kick ass at that.
Scared Of
Needles (spent a long time in hospital as a kid), heights
Happiest When
I'm with El and my friends with no work the following day and a few drinks waiting for me. Singing along to tunes slightly tunelessly. Watching Liverpool when they play well (which sadly isn't all that often).
TV
The Sopranos, The Simpsons, Curb Your Enthusiasm, Family Guy, South Park, Spaced, Father Ted

  • Apologies

Well, I know I promised I'd keep my page updated and I have failed miserably at this simple task. Dear, oh dear. Not much has changed to be honest. My lovely girl is currently away in Peru having a well-earned holiday after not a particularly good 12 months. I stayed in Edinburgh as I didn't have the money and I wouldn't let her pay for me to go. But I'm due to fly out to New York a week on Sunday to spend a week with El seeing the sights in the city I have wanted to visit all my life. So that makes up for it somewhat.
Apart from that, there is not much else to report. Life continues to slip through my fingers at a consistent rate and I need to grab more of a hold. But so do we all.

  • Left Leg of Justice

Hello there once again. Today is my first day back at a computer for over a week. And I'm back in on crutches.
On June 15 I was due to play five-a-side near work. I went in goal to start with and I then scored a goal with my second touch after I came out. It seemed all was going well and I was going to have a good game. And then things went a bit pearshaped.
I controlled the ball, turned, and passed it off to someone with my trusty left peg. Unfortunately an opponent went for a tackle and he was a little too late. He smacked me in the back of my leg and the pain was instant. I was barely able to walk. But - being the muppet I am - I thought I'd go in goals to see if I could run it off. Evidently I was not thinking particularly clearly. The first thing I did was instinctively block a shot with my injured leg. My God that was not a good idea. The pain was ferocious. I was then struggling to get from one side of the goal to the other and I realised I was going to have to give up.
The next morning after not being able to sleep a wink because of the pain El took me to hospital. It felt like we had just been there after she was really ill a couple of months ago. The (very sarcastic - I was not the first five-a-side related injury she had dealt with) nurse who saw me said it was a distinct possibility I'd broken the supporting bone in the back of my leg. X-rays proved that was not the case. But I had torn or damaged numerous muscles in my calf and ankle. No sport/exercise for at least a month or two. Crutches probably needed for a couple of weeks at least.
So I've spent most of the time since sat on my couch with my leg up feeling a bit sorry for myself either playing on the playstation or watching dvds. El has been great and I can't thank her enough for all her help.
I'm back at work now but still on crutches and in quite a bit of pain. It'll be a case of easing myself back into things this week. All in all not the best time to turn 28.
    Till next time.

  • Another Night in May

I'm nervous already and it's not even Wednesday yet. This is bloody ridiculous. Why oh why do I give a shit about 11 guys in red winning a game against 11 guys in white? Sigh. It's all my dad's fault really. My mum says my dad used to tell me I was a Liverpool fan when I was a baby - he also apparently made veiled hints about how much I should dislike United - and he used to sing You'll Never Walk Alone to me when I cried. Don't know how much of that is true (everyone in my family is prone to exaggeration) but I know I didn't have much of a choice about who I supported.
This is of course how it should be. If I ever have any kids, they'll have no choice either. Supporting the mighty reds is a big part of my heritage and (worryingly) my identity so I hope it'll become a big part of theirs as well. And they will be disowned automatically if they ever wear a United top...
But I digress. The point is I'm already worried about the outcome of a game of football and it is 27 and a half hours to kick-off. Nights like tomorrow are simultaneously the best and worst things about supporting a team like Liverpool. They always have a chance and they can always balls it up in some new and unique way.
Not to mention the fact Liverpool have an uncanny ability to be involved in the most dramatic finals imaginable. St Michael stealing the FA Cup from under Arsenal's noses with two goals in injury time in 2001, Gerrard firing home from 35 yards at Cardiff last year, the nine-goal match against Alaves (still possibly the greatest game I have ever seen), and the comeback from the dead two years ago are the main examples worthy of a mention.
So I know there is every chance I will be put through the emotional wringer tomorrow and it might be one of the best nights of my life or one of the most dispriting experiences I will ever go through. And I will know then as I always have that it is all my dad's fault. God bless him.
I'd like to apologise to anyone who hates football for the content of this entry. To everyone else, El and I are heading to the Golf Tavern straight after work tomorrow to get some food, good seats, and plenty of beer (well, for me anyway). Please come along to join us. I'll be the one looking very pale in the corner. And everyone has to be nice to me on Thursday as I'll probably have a hangover and I have to go to work no matter what...
    Till next time.

It freaked me out - Jason donavon has a kinda retro cool factor and the kid from the 6th sense was very cute (not soo much now I grant you), but colin farrell? He smells funny. And I have been subjected to both Miami Vice and Alexander, and I will never, ever, forgive him for that. eurcgh. Hence my shock. I got told I look like Catherine Zeta Jones!!!! V chuffed. Although I took the widget off because I hate the photograph of me. I had wee piggy eyes. Anyway, enough neurosis for 1 day,I think.... oh, and sorry about last night - I heard that you were most unlucky.
