- Whaia e koe te iti Kahurangi
- Me, Myself, and I
A new work from the Kahurangi Maori Dance Company
A powerful explosion of creative energy characterises this ebullient company and their production Waka.
Waka tells the story of the Takitimu waka (canoe) from its origins in Samoa (round 1066) through its many journeys over three hundred years to its eventual arrival in New Zealand. Takitimu is the ancestral canoe of the Ngati Kahungunu tribe from the east coast of the North Island, and South Island, of New Zealand; its proud history is captured in concentrated economical bursts of music, dance, song and mime which
captivate the audience from first moments.
"Waka" will be showcased in the USA in September/October 2008. Watch this space

- Napier Review: WAKA
It is refreshing to see freedom and informality in a format which in Western society is generally governed by more restrictive dramatic codes and formal practices. Secure grounding in culture is certainly a central component; the conviction of the power of Takitimu waka engulfs actors and audience alike in the ebb and flow of the narrative. This celebratory power, like the mighty currents of the ocean, carries all before it.
