O.K. So I don’t have to keep telling everyone why I was in hospital I figure I’d just write it here, make it easier for everyone concerned

In the second week of January I was feeling really shitty, I shan't give you the gory details but lets just say I was going to the toilet 4-5 times a day and it wasn't pleasant.

Well after a week or so of this my mum decided enough was enough and she made me an emergency appointment at the Docs. I go along and the Doc advises me "just try starving yourself for a couple of days, don't eat anything and give your tummy a bit of a rest".
so I do that and it gets worse, on top of going to the toilet 4 -5 times during the day, when I go to bed I'm having to get up at least once every 2 hours to go. Consequently I managed to lose a stone and a half in 3 or 4 days, taking my weight down to 9 stone.

Down to my being stubborn I just try to get on with things and refuse to go back to the doc for another week, believing things will get better on their own. So I go back for my follow up appointment the following Monday at 14:50 and by 15:20 the Doc has sent me up to A&E at St. Johns, well you know what it’s like when you go to A&E, you’re usually left waiting for hours on end but by 15:35 I was being seen to by a nurse and a Doc.

They put me on oxygen and stick a drip in my arm to get fluids into me as I was really dehydrated and my breathing was erratic, apparently my pulse was worryingly high at something like 130 bpm even though all I was doing was lying down on one of the beds and chatting happily away to the nurse.

So I was merely expecting a few tests and probably end up with Anti-Biotics or something, but no, by 8 that night their putting me in the back of an Ambulance and sending me to the Western General in Edinburgh where "They specialise in this type of thing and will have a better idea as to what’s wrong with you".

The first 4 days of being in hospital are kind of a blur, one day melding into the other but from what I can remember and what I’m told I looked like hell. My eyes were sunk back into my head and I was starting to look really gaunt.

I was getting a chest X-ray everyday and an X-ray on my stomach and halfway through the first week the Docs and surgeons come and see me. They tell me that my large bowel had swollen up to a worryingly large state and that if it got any worse then they would probably have to operate and remove 90% of it, however, due to the state I was in they also inform me that it was a 50/50 chance whether I’d come through the op or not.

So I was put on steroid drips and fluid drips and at one point I had three going into me at once and for the first week I was put on a "fluids only" diet which meant all I was allowed to eat or drink was water, I tell you I was utterly starving the first few days but after that I kind of got through being hungry. They then weighed me again and I was now down to 8 and a half stone

By this point getting any sleep at all is nigh on impossible as the nurses have been told to keep a close eye on me, so at least once every hour and a half they were there asking me how I felt and taking my blood pressure, pulse and temperature.

Fortunately though everything seemed to settle down of it’s own accord and I was taken off the “emergency operations list”. Being on that list apparently meant that no matter what else was going on if I needed to have an operation then I had priority, I felt so popular.

The second week was pretty much more of the same, without the threat of death this time, which was nice.

Eventually though they discovered I have a Bowel disease that’s called Crohns Disease, I get the joy of having this for the rest of my life, however it has a twist.

They don't know what causes it, what'll cause it to flare up, if there's any foods I should avoid etc..

But what it boils down to is that it's an entirely individual disease, I might get it again next week, I mi
