FIONA SINNOTT - COUNTY WEXFORD, IRELAND - missing since Feb 9th 1998 I (Michael Way) found this page after reading about your help in finding Shannon Matthews, as reported in the Sunday Independent. This is a wonderful service. I have personal experience - I went missing aged 19, for three years. I was training as a military pilot in the Royal Navy's Fleet Air Arm and I think my instincts were telling me that I wasn't good enough to fly fighter-bombers off aircraft carriers. My family were very proud of me being an officer in the Navy and you couldn't just 'quit' - I was afraid and ashamed of letting the family down. When I returned and gave myself up, I learned that a few weeks after I had left, I had been dismissed and that was it - so I had been on the run and no-one chasing me! I had ended up in Ireland where I met my wife and have had a wonderful life here, though my parents and family paid a price. Is there an Irish branch? It is believed Fiona was murdered.

  • Are you missing?

photo, making a call on a mobile phone

Do you think someone is looking for you?

Have Missing People sent you a letter saying someone is looking for you?

You may have received a letter saying someone is looking for you or you may have seen a 'missing' poster of yourself.

At Missing People we have a team who support families of people who have gone missing and we actively try to find missing people. You may be registered as a case with us and your family may be looking for you.

Click here for advice and support for the families of missing people.

It is important that you know we are a confidential organisation and we respect everyone’s right to go missing, and to stay missing, if that is what they want to do. We know that people go missing for many different reasons and that returning home or getting in touch with family is not always an option. For some people, picking up the phone and making contact with family can be the hardest thing to do, especially after weeks, months or even years of being missing.
Whatever your situation, we are here to help.

We'd like you to know that you can contact us in complete confidence. You may not want to be in direct contact with your family or for them to know where you are. We understand this. However, you may like us to pass a 'safe and well' message to your family on your behalf. Or maybe you just want to talk your situation through with us.

Ring our confidential Message Home service on Freefone 0800 700 740 or email on messagehome@missingpeople.org.uk.

  • Runaways

photo, a teenager who could be a runaway

The Runaway Helpline is a national, Freefone confidential service for anyone who has run away from home or care, or been forced to leave home.

We know that young people run away for many different reasons. Sometimes it is following an argument, or because of bullying, abuse, unhappiness. Sometimes you just want to get some space.

At the Runaway Helpline we don't judge you or tell you what to do. We are here to help you talk through what has happened to you and to explore options of how we can help.

If you feel you can’t call your family or carer yourself, but would like to get a message to someone, we can help. We can forward a message on your behalf to your family or carer. Whatever your reason - whether you want to explain that you need some space or you just want to find out if you can go back - forwarding a message, and receiving one in return, can help give you the confidence to make a phone call yourself.

If you want, we can also arrange a three-way call or conference call, where we connect you through to your family or carer. We find that having someone else on the line can make it easier for you to talk. These calls cannot be traced to you.

Perhaps getting in touch with home or your carer isn't the right thing for you. If that’s the case, we can explore other options with you. For example, we can put you in contact with a locally based runaways’ project, if there is one in your area. Or we can talk about helping you speak to a social worker, if you would like that. Some of our callers want to know if they are reported missing to the police and others worry that they are in trouble with the police. If you want, we can help you talk to a police officer via a three-way call. Again, this call can't be traced and it gives you the chance to ask any questions you may have. There might even be a refuge in your area,. There are lots of ways we can help, so please get in touch.

    Freefone 0808 800 7070

    Contacting us by email: runawayhelpline@missingpeople.org.

You may prefer to contact the Runaway Helpline by sending us an email. We will do everything we can to reply to you within 24 hours. Through email, we can try and pass a message to your family or give you advice and explore your options. Our email service is confidential, and as with phone calls, your email cannot be traced.

Runaway Helpline is a confidential service and we can't trace calls. If we did think you were at risk of serious harm, we may need to let someone else know - but we'd always work with you first to get the help you want.

For more information on our confidentiality policy please email: services@missingpeople.org.uk
