Ghost Whisperer is based on the work of medium James Van Praagh. In the television series, Melinda Gordon (Jennifer Love Hewitt) talks to dead people. The deceased are earthbound spirits who need her help. Melinda relays messages from the dead to their surviving loved ones. Sometimes, messages are intense and confusing. Almost always, the person the message is intended for are, at best, skeptical of Melinda and her motives. The ability to help the lost souls and the people they need to contact outweighs the negatives.
