English Ref Wayne Barnes Loses Match For All Blacks
Me, Myself, and I
This group is for everyone who was angry/upset by referee Wayne Barnes, in the All Blacks vs France Rugby World Cup Match on Sunday 7th October 2007.

His refereeing was so poor, one of the worst I have seen-he is the MAIN reason that the All Blacks are on a plane back home and the French are still in the Rugby World Cup.

If he had any brains he would NOT have given Luke McAlister a yellow card for doing NOTHING at all wrong. If he WASN'T blind he would have been able to see that before France's last try(that secured them the win) a pass that was thrown was about 1 1/2 metres FORWARD.

NZ and the All Blacks will never forget the day Wayne Barnes decided to kick NZ out of the R.W.C, because he was receieving a big payout under the table from the French Coach-Benard Larporte(my guess anyway)

The final score being France 20-18 All Blacks, leaving Graham Henry scratching his head wondering what if we had a ref that could do his job.

And finally heres a joke 4 you all- After the quarter-final in Cardiff, Richie McCaw is walking down the tunnel and spots a cellphone lying on the ground. He picks it up and hands it to the referee. Wayne Barnes says: "How did you know it was mine?" Richie says: "Because there are 15 missed calls on it."

  • NZRU Chairman AGREES WAYNE BARNES IS TO BLAME FOR LOSS!!

WELLINGTON, New Zealand: New Zealand Rugby Union chairman Jock Hobbs Tuesday openly condemned the refereeing performance of Englishman Wayne Barnes, saying he committed errors that cost the All Blacks 17 points in their 20-18 World Cup quarterfinal loss to France.

"Some of the decisions the referee made had an enormous bearing on the outcome," Hobbs said. "In our view some of the decisions were very, very questionable."

While New Zealand fans have been bitterly critical of the 28-year-old referee since their team's loss on Saturday saying he awarded France their winning try from a forward pass, the All Blacks team and rugby union officials previously had been diplomatic.

Hobbs broke an official silence on Barnes' performance Tuesday after announcing his union would mount a full independent inquiry into the All Blacks' World Cup failure, which is expected to have severe financial ramifications for the sport in New Zealand.

Asked if the referee's performance would be considered as a factor in the All Blacks' defeat, Hobbs said it had to be but added the responsibility for evaluating Barnes' performance lay with Rugby World Cup Ltd. and the International Rugby Board.

The IRB's referees manager, New Zealander Paddy O'Brien, already has defended Barnes who, as a novice referee, was a controversial appointment to the match. O'Brien has said the better team won and the Kiwis should "get over it."

Barnes, a qualified barrister who switched to professional refereeing, controlled his first test match in February and was considered an unlikely appointment to such an important match.

O'Brien admitted a pass leading to France's second try was forward, but said he had spoken to Barnes since Saturday's match to tell him he stood by him. He advised Barnes to ignore criticism coming from New Zealand and to be proud of his performance.

"We will be reviewing Wayne's performance," O'Brien said.

"There is not one referee at this World Cup who has not made mistakes in games. That's part and parcel of refereeing.

"Overall we thought Wayne refereed very well."

The IRB announced late Tuesday that Barnes would not be assigned to any other matches during the World Cup. Only four matches remain.

Hobbs cited several critical errors by Barnes which, he said, affected the outcome of Saturday's match.

He listed the sin-binning of New Zealand center Luke McAlister for obstruction, though television replays suggested the French opponent had collided deliberately with McAlister.

Hobbs said France scored 10 points in the 10 minutes that McAlister was off the field.

He also said, and television replays confirmed a pass that led to France's second try was forward, costing New Zealand another seven points.

Barnes' awarded nine penalties against New Zealand and only two against France.

Hobbs told Radio New Zealand from Paris Tuesday that the performance of the referee could not be discounted as a factor in the All Blacks' loss.

"We would like that performance to be reviewed, to be consider as part of what we would hope anyway that Rugby World Cup Ltd. would do in terms of their performance," he said.

In a New Zealand internet poll which had received more than 20,000 hits by Tuesday, 38.4 percent of respondents blamed Barnes for the All Blacks loss while only 23.7 blamed the team and 9.2 percent the coach Graham Henry.

New Zealand rugby fans previously vandalized Barnes' Wikipedia biography, adding a mock obituary saying he had been lynched by an angry mob. Wikipedia later sanitized the entry, but left a reference saying some of Barnes rulings had "caused controversy among fans and commentators."

  • Finally NZRU start to blame Wayne Barnes 4 loss!!! Fuk Paddy O'Brien(irb boss) he's a knob!!

Some of the decisions the referee made had an enormous bearing on the outcome," Hobbs told Radio New Zealand today.

"In our view some of the decisions were very, very questionable."

Hobbs, in announcing the NZRU would mount a full independent inquiry into the All Blacks' World Cup failure, said the referee's performance had to be considered as well, but admitted the responsibility for evaluating Barnes performance lay with the Rugby World Cup and the International Rugby Board.

"We would like that performance to be reviewed, to be consider as part of what we would hope anyway that Rugby World Cup Ltd would do in terms of their performance," Hobbs said.

Hobbs' and Kiwi fans have been critical of Barnes' performance, especially the sinbinning of Luke McAlister and the failure to spot a forward pass in the movement in which France scored its match-winning try.

Kiwi fans baying for Barnes' blood would be delighted today to learn the Englishman has missed out on further appointments at the Rugby World Cup.

Irate critics of Barnes went as far as vandalising his Wikipedia internet profile while a storm of protest is clogging up chatrooms.

The IRB today announced that Irishman Alain Rolland will control the final with the semifinals going to South Africa's Jonathan Kaplan and New Zealand's Steve Walsh while fellow Kiwi, Paul Honiss, has the third-fourth playoff.

Until Hobbs' comments, the NZRU and the All Blacks had delicately sidestepped commenting on Barnes' performance, despite his failure to detect a blatant French forward pass leading up to the winning try and his controversial sinbinning of Luke McAlister.

However, the Kiwi boss of Rugby World Cup referees, Paddy O'Brien, has waded into the saga - admitting the pass was forward but telling critics the better team won and chiding New Zealand fans to grow up.

O'Brien said he advised Barnes to ignore criticism coming from New Zealand and to be proud of his performance.

"We will be reviewing Wayne's performance," O'Brien said.

"There is not one referee at this World Cup who has not made mistakes in games. That's part and parcel of refereeing.

"Overall, we thought Wayne refereed very well."

However, Barnes appears to have paid for his display with news this morning that he has missed further appointments at the cup.

A "gutted" McAlister added fresh controversy yesterday, saying he did not deserve to be yellow-carded and his opponent had run into him.

McAlister also revealed he only attempted a panicked drop goal from halfway in the dying moments because Barnes was signalling advantage.

"The ref had his arm out so I just thought I would have a stab at it, thinking that we would come back for the advantage. But obviously he thought the advantage was over."

Barnes, 28, who refereed his first test in February this year, has found himself completely offside with Kiwi rugby fans.

Chatrooms are clogged with anti-Barnes invective and Internet encyclopedia Wikipedia had to move swiftly to stop cyber vandalism by angry All Blacks supporters, who posted a mock obituary of Barnes saying he had been "lynched" by a mob after the game. Contributors also posted a mock bounty on his head.

The entry was sanitised by Wikipedia but a reference that Barnes' refereeing "caused controversy among fans and commentators" remains.

A 24-hour poll on stuff.co.nz received over 34,000 votes with 10,426 singling out Barnes as the reason for the loss. However, "the team" was blamed slightly more, receiving 10,481 votes.

One disgruntled fan said: "The French played OK but not well enough to beat the All Blacks without a little help from the runt of the refereeing litter."
