U2 - No Line On The Horizon - March 3rd 2009
Rolling Stone practically shot its load over the new U2 album, including the lyrics! Then again, they only judge based on buzz, or based on their pantheon of established artists who they will always love. Anyway here's my reveiw of NLOTH.....
No line on the horizon is U2's 12th studio album and after nearly 30 years of chart crashing and sell-outs, starting afresh can't be easy. First single "Get on Your Boots" is a worrisome harbinger-- to call it a mess would be generous. The song combines sub-Audioslave riffs with Escape Club's "Wild Wild West" and sounds more disjointed than the worst Girl Talk rip off. "I don't wanna talk about wars between nations-- not right now!" claims Bono on the song, before yelling the virtues of tight leather boots.
NLOTH falls under two categorys, mind numbing blandness and embarrassing vocal choices by the messiah bono, so embarrassing that i actually starting laughing during his high pitched "crazy tonight" on track 5 "ill go crazy if i dont go crazy tonight".
The album is full of shameless U2-isms (the three-note ring Edge nicks from "Walk On" for track 4 "Unknown Caller", the "oh oh oh" outro from "Stay" apparently copied and pasted into track 3 "Moment of Surrender", etc.).
There's alot of "oh oh oh" and "ooooooohhhh" rather than his usual "yeah yeah YEAH",cringe-worthy in fact, and can be heard on almost every track.
It seems as though bono and co. are trying too hard, and are more interested in pleasing their bank manager.
To quote south park's stan marsh, "bono, don't you think its time you, like, f**k off"
Guns n Roses - Chinese Democracy - November 23rd 2008
"The most anticipated album of 2008" and also the most expensive, the hype has been massive, but then, so is the elaborate industrial rock and extravagant orchestral effects within these 14 tracks. 14 years and $13 million dollars in the making, it almost sounds over produced.
I have to be honest, I wasn't too optimistic about this album, I mean, its not Guns n Roses is it? Like me, I imagine most Guns n Roses fans would agree that with Axl Rose as the only original member and without Slash and Izzy Stradlin, the band is too far from its original dynamic to be able to produce songs of their previous caliber.
In typical dramatic fashion the album opens with a blood curdling Axl Rose scream bringing bandmates and ex-lovers to their sha na na na na na na na knees..knees. The most satisfying songs are punchier, punky numbers like 'Better' 'Scraped' and 'If the world'. 'There was a time' on the other hand, sounds like a bond theme, and it doesn't half go on. The album takes a few breathers with slower, reflective tunes such as the bluesy 'Sorry' and the love tinged rock ballad 'Streets of dreams'
Overall, the songs are epic, long-winded, cleverly stitched together, and subject to constant mood-swings, much like Axl himself. Rose sings in many voices - snarling, crowing, raging opening his battered heart. I would buy this for Axl alone, his presence is phenomonal, unrivalled in contemporary rock.
The Killers - Day & Age - November 24th 2008
Wow, im not a huge fan of the killers but this is the biggest pile of shite ive heard in a long time. It starts off promising enough, (and im being generous here) 'Losing touch', 'Human', and 'Spaceman' all sound like their previous pop triumphs. On Spaceman, Brandon Flowers sounds like he's singing while riding in the grand national. When i heard track 4 'Joy Ride', i immediately thought Duran Duran, no wait, fucking copacabana by Barry Manilow!
The rest of the album is entirely forgetttable. There is the bowie homage 'Neon tiger' and before you know it the boring seven minute closer 'Good night, travel well'. I can only assume Brandon and co. thought bringing back the 80's pop sound was an attempt to be cool, eh.....no thanks not for me. However if you like the pet shop boys then this might be just for you
