Nightly bottle fights, public drunkenness, mob violence, trespassing, theft and blatant drug use have some Mangere East residents living in fear. Vine St and Blake Rd residents spoke out about the problems in their neighbourhood at a public meeting last week.
A few "bad apples" are spoiling a great community, they say.
Representatives from the police, Housing New Zealand, Manukau City Council, Tamaki ki Raro Trust and the Maori Wardens Association listened to the community’s frustration at the meeting. Residents say smashed glass litters public spaces and the streets, endangering children and making local parks useless.
One Blake Rd resident fears she’ll be "bottled" if she walks on the street outside her house.
"There is a mob of 10 to 20 young guys who consistently sit on a bus seat on the street.
"From the day they declared that their patch the mob has got bigger and bigger and bigger and unfortunately it’s got more violent.
"I can’t tell you how many bottle fights there have been there at 2.30 and even 6.30 in the morning."
The daily gatherings can sometimes reach up to 40 men and boys. The woman says they threaten her and often enter her property illegally. Another Blake Rd resident says she suffers the same intimidation and is living in fear.
"I don’t want to ring the police because you think if they know it’s you then they’re going to get back at you.
"I think that’s the concern of a lot of people – that if we tell someone those people are going to come back and get us.
"I don’t really know what we can do. I know what I do on my little patch – we watch each other and try to do our best."
Some residents blame the violence, drunkenness and litter on the easy availability of alcohol in the suburb. There is one liquor store on Vine St and two convenience stores which have stocked alcohol in the past.
Manukau district licensing inspector Paul Radich says one of the convenience stores has reapplied for its liquor licence but his agency is opposing that application. Vine St liquor store owner Jagwinder Singh says the blame for alcohol-related violence should not fall on him as a licensed bottle shop owner but on those people being irresponsible with alcohol.
A man who spends his time painting out graffiti on the shops says drug-dealing, tagging and bottle-smashing are common in the thoroughfare behind the shops.
He says it needs to be blocked off.
Most of the community is eager to address the problems, the man says.
"We got a good community here. It’s just a couple of bad apples – that’s all it is."
Community constable Nico Ng Wun says the meeting was a step in the right direction for the neighbourhood. It was important to show residents the police were working with local and central government on solutions to the area’s problems, he says.
"From a police perspective we will be increasing patrols in the area after the hours of darkness.
"We will collate all the details of the youth who are being stopped drunk and gather information as to where they get the alcohol from.
"If they’re caught in the park they will be issued with liquor infringement notices."
