Me, Myself, and I
Black Thorn were a hard rock band based in Tralee - formed in 2005 have and gigged regularly in the KDYS. Most notably, they've had the distinction of playing in Denmark as part of a music festival for bands around Europe. The band merged with past members of another local music band called Fists of Fury. The bands line up varied from time to time as a result. The band also had an E.P recorded during the summer of that year which is available on this page.

  • End of an Era

    Sunday marked the end of a glorious era. Black Thorn is no more. Late in 2003, the bands first incarnation Fists of Fury played their first gig in the greyhound bar. It is somewhat approriote then, that our last gig was also to be held in the greyhound bar, where it all started in the first place.

    so heres a look back at the history of the band, from gig number 1 up to the last one. i probably left out a gig or two but most of it is here. besides, its going to pass away presumably a very boring evening.

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    - Greyhound Bar with Aphid (Late 2003), Stupid Betty, Philtre, Excess, Mike Hunt. The grand debut, which featured Egans thumping rendition of Louie Louie. The original lineup of Fists was Ian O'Doherty, David Williams, Sean Tarrant, Tony O'Connor and Alan Sheehy.
    - KDYS Xmas gig (around Xmas 2003), with Stupid Betty and Mike Hunt. Highlights include the highspeed Freebird solo with the moshing crowd and THAT drumroll.
    - Moloneys Bar, Listowel (january 2004) - Ian takes the night off to go to a debs so Egan sings for us. Ultimately the band decide on a new name for the night, "The Greedy Bastards", so called because they spounged a support slot to Excess on Excess' own paid gig, which meant that only those in both bands got their full cut and the rest got half due to having two bands. It was so small that the drummer had to be built into the kit everytime. Oddly enough, it felt like we brought a KDYS lineup to that gig with the amount of gear we had for such a small bar...
    - KDYS (february 2004), Alan departs and Ivan takes up drumming duties, and his only practice beforehand was the soundcheck! First gig to feature an original from the band, called "Hinterlands". Other highlights include Jacks memorable camera work, the Tony chants during simple man (and toga chants during still in love with you) and Sean moaning 'im tired, i wanna go home. ive got work in the morning' audably during a still in love with you jam.
    - KDYS (february 2004) - Another gig in the same old spot. Due to commitments elsewhere for the evening, Ian plays bass for a one-off in place of Tony. The gig marks the debut of Turn the Wheel and For the Flag. The band are tigher this time around thanks in part to more jammin. Highlights other than the new songs include Daves funky shirt, Sean sitting out one or two songs at the side of the stage and Ivan trying to piece back Rory Horigans kit before an encore song.
    - Greyhound Bar (march 2004) - In aid of the B.O.P, Fists play with Mike Hunt (teeheehee) and Philtre. The gig was held under some mighty hot stage lights which nearly cooked the place. Tony sports a long leather jacket and cowboy hat and Ian forgets to learn Jailbreak (again...). Egan therefore duets with Ian to help him sing it. Not a very highlighty gig other than the fact that a certain green frog went missing after a night of excesses.
    - Blennerville (march 2004) - In aid of the victorious "Total Enjoyment" in Aintree. Nobody knew where the hell we were playing, until we found out it was out the side of a large arctic truck (which are large anyway i suppose...). We jammed Jailbreak briefly in soundcheck, and the heavens opens so soundcheck finished quite quickly. When the event got underway, the speaker THANKED the band who played earlier. "Very talented lads, i think they'll go just as far as Total Enjoyment perhaps". We scrambled back onto the stage in a rage to play before the crowd left us to prove we were only starting our gig now. Eventually we played a few notes for Daves dad and some runner who was jogging on the pitch. Highlights include the near electrocution of us all, the hunt for power sockets in the nearby locality using some lengthy extension cables, Tony on the mic to the runner "number 26, your time is up", and the drumkit issues which James and Ivan had (which were quite strange and dont merit going into).
    - Mounthawk Fashion Show (march 2004) - Featured Egan on drums as Ivan wa
  • Lyrics
    Heres the lyrics of the songs on the Black Thorn E.P. The lyrics of the fists of fury songs (those with ian credited for songwriting) were interpreted from some rehersal recordings so they may not actually be totally accurate to how they should be, but the ones here are what were sung on the recordings here. Enjoy!
    *Cheap Imitation*
    (Written by Ian O'Doherty and Dave Williams)
    Tried so hard to let the daylight get through
    Everything in life I've done I've failed
    I'm nothing but a cheap imitation
    I'll live my life but I'll die
    Maybe this is what its like
    To have your words fall upon deaf ears
    Nobody wants to listen to you
    Maybe this is what its like
    To have your tears fade
    Away and out
    She tried so hard to get her way
    Everything in life she's done she's failed
    She's nothing but a cheap imitation
    She'll live by the light of life then she'll die
    Maybe this is what its like
    To have your words fall upon deaf ears
    Nobody wants to listen to you
    Maybe this is what its like
    To have your tears fade
    Away and out
    *Days That Change*
    (Written by Kevin O'Sullivan & Ivan O'Connor)
    You see me walkin down the road again today
    You're eyes gaze over, you've got nothin else to say
    You've made you're feelings very clear
    Your love for me has died
    But this much I'll swear to you
    You're the last girl that's ever made me cry
    Days that change the world
    To one man all alone
    We are the same
    The only universal thing
    Thats left now is the pain
    I see it in your eyes
    Each time I look in them
    (I can see it in your eyes)
    I see you drivin' with him in his flashy car
    I smile and think that your the one who said that I couldn't go far
    Oh well, I suppose you've made your bed
    And now you lie by his side
    Meanwhile I sit here and cry
    Days that change the world
    To one man all alone
    We are the same
    The only universal thing
    Thats left now is the pain
    I see it in your eyes
    Each time I look in them
    (I can see it in your eyes)
    *For the Flag*
    (Written by Ian O'Doherty and Dave Williams)
    Ten men hold another flag up
    Ten men pray they're gonna get it all
    Ten men promisin' while they lay there dead
    They took my green fields away
    Playing with demons they thought had gone 'way
    Now they've turn my green fields grey
    Young men were dyin'
    But the flag still was a flyin'
    Takin' my family and home
    Young men were dyin'
    But the flag still was a flyin'
    Takin' my family and home
    The trenches became their graves
    Misfortune had made them I suppose
    Young men standing in the place
    With the dead and the dirty red leaves
    It was never holier to die alone
    Into their graves where they died old
    Young men were dyin'
    But the flag still was a flyin'
    Takin' my family and home
    Young men were dyin'
    But the flag still was a flyin'
    Takin' my family and home
    The tales that baffled his heart
    He can't tell its beatin' along
    If he'll wants to succeed
    He'll put his hands on this wheel
    Though he and his father have gone
    His ghost holds a homely ranch in my own home
    (Yeah)
    Young men were dyin'
    But the flag still was a flyin'
    Takin' my family and home
    Young men were dyin'
    But the flag still was a flyin'
    Takin' my family and home
    *Turn the Wheel*
    (Written by Ian O'Doherty & Sean Tarrant)
    She grew up in a poison house
    One where daddy was never around
    Mama always hit the bottle too hard
    Days floated by in alcohol
    Nobody was ever around for her
    To tell her to keep on turning the wheel
    Now she dances with angels
    Refusing to turn the pages
    Kept her story buried inside
    Now shes hit the ground
    And shes gonna keep on falling
    If she doesnt turn around
    Now shes hit the ground
    And shes gonna keep on falling
    If she doesnt turn around
    Goes to church to preach to the preacher
    Believing she can catch the killer
    Wiery head on tired shoulders they gave her
    Became a mom at seventeen
    She never got
