Oscar Bueno9/17/10Our story starts during "The Great Hunger" from 1845-1852 - During this time, Ireland was struck with famine and a large portion of their population fell. Exact numbers of those who died of starvation and disease is not known but estimates range between 1 - 1.5 million. Furthermore, numerous families during the famine fled to the west in hopes of a more prosperous life. Although the potato blight eliminated Ireland's main source of food, the primary cause for the famine came from the laws restricting the rights of the Irish and the power that foreign landlords held over the land.
