About Me

Gay & Lesbian Youth Northern Ireland
Who we are
Gay & Lesbian Youth Northern Ireland, or GLYNI as are usually known, was set up in 1999 as a project of Cara Friend Lesbian and Gay Helplines, in response to the increased number of calls from young people and their friends and families. It was originally funded by Comic Relief, which paid for a youth worker to get the group up and running. Since then, the funding expired, and we have been running on volunteers' time and money, with small donations and fund-raising. We still remain the largest, LGBT-inclusive youth service provider in N Ireland. WE operate under a peer-led ethos, which means our young people run the group, make the decisions, plan the programmes and measure the outcomes. Simply, it is a youth group, and we stick to that.

Unfortunately, we are restricted to Belfast due to lack of serious money in our bank account. But don't let that stop you, many of our members have and do come from outside of the Greater Belfast Area. We have a remit for NI, so we will endeavour to
Why do we do what we do?
Simply because, we believe all LGBT young people have the right to participate fully in society, as citizens with every right, legally and otherwise, to live their lives without prejudice, bigotry or discrimination. To this end, we will endeavour to provide you with whatever help, information and support we can. We have all been where you may be right now, and some of us still are, so let us help you help yourself. Even if it is just a friendly face you are looking for

New Members
As GLYNI is an open group, members can join at any time. Usually, we provide what we call a BEFRIENDING beforehand, to allow you the chance to meet some of our volunteers, ask those inportant questions, but more importantly see a friendly face, so that when you do join, you don't walk into a room full of strangers. We have all been there, so we know how you feel. That is why, at GLYNI, we try to make you feel as relaxed and welcome as possible. You may even get a cuppa made for you by our expert tea-persons of non-descript gender!!!
Help and Support
If you would like some information or support, or are interested in joining, please feel free to email mail@glyni.org.uk. One of our trained volunteers will get back to you as soon as possible. We can talk to you via email, or messages on here, or if you'd rather meet face-to-face, we can do that to. This is your experience, we will make it as easy and comfortable for you as we can.
