• McDowell could be sole PD leaderhip candidate

  It is looking increasingly likely that Justice Minister Michael McDowell will win the leadership of the Progressive Democrat Party unopposed.
  
  He is one of three party members who are believed to be possible candidates, however so far neither he nor Tom Parlon or Liz O'Donnell have formally applied for the position.
  
  A substantial number of the party's TDs, Senators and Councillors are registering their support for the Minister Mc Dowell to replace Mary Harney as party leader.
  
  Galway West TD Noel Grealish said a leadership battle at this stage would be divisive.
  
  “Well I hope that it would. I think it’s vitally important we have a smooth transition from one leader to another,” he said
  
  “As it’s so close to the general election, I don’t think it would be the right move to have a leadership contest. Hopefully on Monday there will be only one candidate and it’ll be a smooth transition.”

• Harney and McDowell play down reports of rift

  The Tánaiste and Minister for Justice have denied reports of a major row over the leadership of the Progressive Democrats earlier this week.
  
  Reports this morning said Mary Harney had threatened to sack Michael McDowell from the cabinet and from his position as PD president following a leadership challenge.
  
  Mr McDowell had reportedly threatened not to stand in the next General Election unless Ms Harney honoured an alleged deal to stand aside from the PD leadership before then.
  
  However, asked about the matter this morning, the two politicians both denied the substance of the reports.
  
  Ms Harney said there was never any deal relating the leadership of the PDs as this was a matter for the party's parliamentarians and college of electors to decide.
  
  
  She also denied that she had threatened to sack Mr McDowell and insisted that the party was united.
  
  The Minister for Justice, meanwhile, refused to comment on whether the question of leadership was raised earlier this week, but he also denied that the Tánaiste threatened to sack him or that there was a rift over the party leadership.
  
  "There is no leadership struggle in the Progressive Democrats," he said. "No threat was ever made to me and I also want to say that I never asked Mary Harney to step aside as leader."
