Hey everyone asking for your support here!

The Jennifer Trust has been nominated for the Best Health Project Award at the National Lottery Awards. They have the chance to win £2000 and appear on a BBC1 show which could help them raise awareness of Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

Spinal Muscular Atrophy is a disease which blocks the links between the brain and muscles, causing the muscles to waste away through time. Babies born with Type 1 SMA do not live very long but those born with Type 2 SMA can live into early adulthood, although may be confined to a wheelchair and are more susceptible to chest infections. The Jennifer Trust helps support those affected and their families and are hoping to use the money they may recieve by hiring outreach workers who can visit the families

The workers visit families in their own homes to give practical information and advice about coping on a daily basis, and share things other families have found useful. This includes loaning out specially designed toys for babies with weak muscles, advice about welfare support, hospice care and special equipment. They also provide support for younger family members.

Parents are encouraged to take an active role in their child’s care, and outreach workers help them discuss the care programme with health professionals. They also support and train healthcare staff, like nurses, health visitors and occupational therapists who may not otherwise be aware of up-to-date information about the condition.
