  • My goals

People have said to me, “The sky is the limit.” However, I would say, “It is better to reach for the stars.” when people limit themselves, they miss out on so many great opportunities. Therefore, I would like to reach for the stars and aim for a great career. I want a career where I can help people and make a difference. These are my reasons for becoming a pediatrician.
On my path to becoming a pediatrician, I must graduate from high school. In addition, I am going to challenge myself to graduate from high school as a Top Ten student in my class ranking. Remaining in the Top Ten is one of my goals during my high school years.
My next goal may sound ridiculous, but for me it is not. I do not want to get married or be pregnant while I am still in high school. I see that a lot of Hmong girls these days are getting pregnant or married. Some of the girls that do get pregnant give up on their education and just goes to work. Others continue to come to school but have a harder time because their priorities are completely different from the rest of the students. For both a married or pregnant girl, they no longer have the freedom that they once had. My education and my freedom are both really important to me. Therefore, I created this goal.
After high school, I want to volunteer at Children’s Hospital over the summer. This will allow me to get more experience working with children in a hospital setting. I know how stressful and boring a hospital can be for a kid, so I hope to make a child day feel better. Therefore, volunteering at Children’s will allow me to make a difference while gaining experiences at the same time.
As the summer after graduation ends, I will be going to a four year college or university. I plan to major in biology or children’s psychology. After three years of undergraduate education, I will take the Medical College Admission Tests (MCAT). Then I will apply and attend a medical school after obtaining my bachelor’s degree. After medical school, I will complete my internship and residency and become a pediatrician.
When I do become a pediatrician, I want to work in a hospital for about five to ten years. In those five to ten years, I want to help as many people as I can. After my years in a hospital, I want to open my own Pediatric Clinic. It would be a free non profit clinic. A goal that I have for doing this is so that Hmong kids will have a person that can motivate them. Make them think, “If she can do this, then I can too!” I want Hmong kids to know that they can pursue any kind of career that they want, no matter how hard it is. I also want to show Hmong girls do not need to be the ones who stay at home to cook, clean, and watch the kids 24/7. If they have their own dreams, they should follow it.
Another goal that I want to accomplish is to provide free health care for children. Not every one has medical insurance. This is a problem for kids all over the United States of America. Therefore, making my Pediatric Clinic a free clinic will be a start to accomplishing my goal. I understand that this will be a very challenging goal to accomplish because health care does require a lot of money, but like the saying goes, “If there’s a will, there’s a way.”
My goals are getting more and more challenging to the point where it might seem impossible to do. But if I just keep reaching for the stars, be optimistic, determine, and work hard. I know that will accomplish my goals.

    1. In America our heroes have customarily run to men of large accomplishments. But today this college and country honors a man whose contribution was not our size but to our spirit; not to our political beliefs but to our insight; not to our self-esteem but to our self-comprehension. In honoring Robert Frost, we therefore can pay honor to the deepest sources of our national strength. That strength takes many forms, and the most obvious form are not always the most significant. The men who create power make an indispensable contribution to the nation’s greatness. But the men who question power make a contribution just as indispensable, especially when that questioning is disinterested. For they determine whether we use power or power uses us. Our national strength matters; but the spirit which informs and controls our strength matters just as much. This was the special significance of Robert Frost.
