- I was best known as a right-footed left-winger, although I had the ability to be able to use both feet with equal precision and power.
I became developed with Ajax under Louis van Gaal. I was a member of the Ajax team that won the European Cup in 1995 against A.C. Milan of Italy. However, soon after I suffered a serious right knee injury in 1996, which kept me out of Euro 96. Despite my injury, I was signed by Arsenal in the summer of 1997.
I scored in the 1-0 victory over Manchester United at Old Trafford, which helped us to the Double. In the 1998 World Cup, I was a regular fixture for Holland where we achieved a semi-final showdown with Brazil.
In the summer of 2000, I moved to Spain and joined FC Barcelona, for ₤25 million (€39.6 million).
I played regularly in Barcelona's 2001-02 UEFA Champions League campaign in which I scored once in ten matches en route to the semi-finals.
I now had a persistent knee injury, so I took the doctor's advice, retiring on July 26 2004
