THE majestic mountain of Hikurangi, the iconic symbol of the Ngāti Porou
tribe, stands 1754 metres aloft in the heart of the Raukūmara range. Along with
her sentinel minders — the smaller adjacent mountains of Whanokao, Aorangi, Wharekia,
Taitai and Ōtapu — she casts a watchful eye over the Waiapu River as it meanders on its everchanging pathway to the sea.
Hikurangi is anointed by the first rays of sunlight each and every day, signalling to the
world the arrival of Tamanui-i-te-rā (name of the sun). During winter her principal peaks,
Te Tipi-a-Taikehu and Te Tone-o-Houku, can occasionally be seen coated in snow. In the small lake, Takawhiti, the petrified tail piece of Māui’s waka (canoe), Nukutaimemeha, with the ridged and striped waves of Raropō breaking over her, can still be seen. And enclosing the lake is Te Maara-a-Kahukurapō, the cultivated gardens of
Kahukurapō.
