- Although six months earlier people were telling New Zealand's Datsuns to give up, by mid-2002 London's music press was hailing them as "genius." By then the Datsuns had already been playing their brand of garage rock for six years, ever since they met at school in Cambridge and formed a band called Trinket.
Back in 1997, as Trinket, they won the local radio station's Battle of the Bands. The following year, now called the Datsuns, they won again. In the years that followed the group released only a handful of singles, all on vinyl and all on their own record label, Hell Squad Records. While beloved of student radio and known for their live Who-like performances, they were a relatively unknown group even at home. Things started to look up in March 2001, when a tour of Australia caused a bit of a stir, especially in Melbourne. Encouraged, the Datsuns made plans to take on London.
First it was the fickle London music press that flocked to the group's gigs, jostling with each other to hail the Datsuns as the greatest thing they'd seen. Record companies followed, waving checkbooks in their faces. One major-label boss flew in from New York to check out the action. Their London tour of duty had started with the band sleeping on other people's couches. Before long, at least one hopeful record company was fronting hotel bills. In July 2002 the band signed with the V2 label. The band then prepped for the domestic release of their self-titled effort, which appeared in 2002. Two years later the Datsuns returned with Outta Sight/Outta Mind. Smoke & Mirrors followed in 2006.

apocalypto!
ok, today we played a french 24 hour motorcycle race. sounds strange? sure was! also fantastically awesome and GREAT! enough hyperbole for you?
turns out some of our favorite bands have played this:
the HELLACOPTERS, FLAMING SIDEBURNS and the STOOGES! also skid row have played it..
for those of you peploids familiar with the Australian film MAD MAX, pretty much EXACTLY like that but with
the DATSUNS providing a nonstop 90 min soundtrack.. overplaying our way into french hearts.. yes a great
chance to try out some long long long new songs.. favorite surreal observations:
* AT LEAST 19 motor vehicles ON FIRE
* Man dressed as penis
* warring with rescue flares
* naked man surfing on moving car
* a GIANT billboard of C DATSUN striking a pose...
very humorous indeed

wowzers. this is obviously a month for the unusual.
we've been looking forward to this for a while..
we've just spent the last few days sailing around the swedish archipelago on board a ferry/cruise liner.. here is the premise: get a bunch of great rnr bands. a boat and some tax free finnish liquor for exactly 24 hours.
its the ROCK'N'ROLL BOAT!
since we played waaaay late we ended up doing a lot of moving, shaking & schmoozin with some old and new friends..
we ended up playing at 2am to literally a boatload of drunken scandinavians.. and of course it had to get rough when we hit the stage.
the mirror balls swayed, we slid and slipped all over the place.. actually not much different from our typical monkeying around on dry land really.
finally hit the hay after watching the sun rise over the baltic sea..
Ben's seasickness finally got the better of him during the next afternoon during the beautifully hyperactive sounds of RANDY, there goes the swedish smorgasboard!
NOISE CONSPIRACY were also dynamite!
