Introduction
‘Daring to disturb’ an exhibition that reflects the opinions given by numerous artists explaining or criticising issues relating to war, race, social and politics.
To raise a social comment is to create a view on society and the events that take place within it. These comments can be issued to the audience through different types of sources. An example of a social comment made through a certain source, is through an artwork.
The role in which social comment artworks take in society is a leading one today. It is a way in which an artist can express their view on these issues and communicate them across to their audience.
Many artists choose to express views on issues of social or political concern as it can help prodce emotional reactions from a greater mass of society. Through these emotional reactions the artworks successfully challenge their audiences.
Daring to disturb includes four intriguing artists that have successfully challenged and moved their audiences through their provocative artworks.
The artists and their works are the following:
• Barbara Kruger – you have received orders not to move
• Gordon Bennett- self portrait {but I always wanted to be one of the good guys}
• George Gittoes – Rwanda Maconde
And
• Pablo Picasso – Guernica
These artists reveal how art can play a role in commenting and shaping our society by challenging our values, or as Picasso’s contemporary, the poet TS Eliot said… “dare (to) disturb the universe?”.
