U2 – October (1981)
This album is the second album from U2. Unfortunately, it’s a bit of a mess. From the first track, ‘Gloria’, to the fifth, ‘Fire’, it lurches on heavily echoed guitars, howling vocals, far too heavy drumbeats and god-awful lyrics.
Tracks six and seven are an improvement, however. The uileann pipes intro to ‘Tomorrow’ is beautiful and the vocals, for once, don’t have Bono screaming into the microphone. ‘October’ is a good song, the piano part sounds as if an older mind then the Edge’s formed that. It’s a pity that Bono couldn’t come up for lyrics that match the beauty of the piano work, as it could have been a great in U2’s repetoire. It is the “bonus track” that comes after ‘All I Want Is You’ on the Best of 1980-1990 album.
There are two other great parts to the album. Scarlet is a precursor to “’40’”, ‘MLK’, ‘Mothers Of The Disappeared’, ‘Grace’ and all the quieter, reflective songs that end U2 albums, while the intro guitar riff from Is That All?, a steal from an unrecorded U2 song called Cry, which the band will segue onto the beginning of The Electric Co., is incredible. Pity the rest of the song is such a mess.
In all, October is an album that should be bought by serious fans of U2 trying to complete their collection
Sorry if it is a bit harsh.

Review of the Under a blood red sky, live at red rocks video
filmed at the red rocks ampitheatre, denver, colorado in 1983, this is considered to be not only of u2's greatest gigs, but one of the best concerts ever caught on film.
All afternoon, there was torrential rain, many thought the gig would be called off. However, it cleared up as time passed and the band were able to play a great set.
The video starts of with a strong performance of "Surrender", one of my personal favourites with Bono reaching out for the crowd. Next up is "Seconds" with Edge moving to the centre mic as he sings the first part of the song.
"This is not a rebel song, this song is Sunday Bloody Sunday" is how Bono introduced the next song while waving the white flag around during the bridge of the song.
Edge steps up to the piano next for an emotional performance of "October" while Adam prepares to belt out the thundering bassline to the next song, "New Year's Day".
Larry then shows off his skills with "I threw a brick through a window" which seugues straight into "A Day Without Me", many people consider this to be one of the best transitions between two U2 songs.
"Gloria" is the next song with the slide guitar from Edge and Adam making his bass shine during his solo.
And now its time for Edge's naff acoustic work on "Party Girl"! Bono tries to compensate by saying "It's our hero!"
No rubbish when the Gibson Explorer is strapped on though when the opening riff of "11 o'clock, tick tock" rings thoughout the ampitheatre while Bono brings a girl on stage to dance with.
The explorer is kept out for "I Will Follow", an all-time live favourite.
Adam and Edge swap guitars for the ultimate closer, the classic "40". Such a great atmosphere caused the band to return for an encore!!
In my personal opinion, everyone regardless of their thoughts about U2 should watch this performance as it is very powerful and shows the band as a contender for "The Best Live Band In The World".
