BAGGY FLAG RECORDS...
The label Baggy Flag Records® was officially born on 3rd October 2005 but that was by no means the beginning of this journey. Back in 2000 Digit wrote his first rhyme and from that point on, he knew. At first, it was just for himself, until he realised he had a real talent. Not only lyrically gifted, he then went on to start producing beats in 2002 - around the same time he hooked up with old school friend Tubz, who he hadn't been in touch with for a while.
Tubz had also been writing rhymes for a while and when the two came together, it was clear what they had to do. Make music. They began writing together, developing their already promising skills and, eventually, making magic happen. In 2003 they put on their first show at The Forum in Tunbridge Wells, under the name 2Halves. One heavy night and much crowd respect later, Digit & Tubz knew they had something good.
Following the success of that night, and some pushin from local MC Tomberculosis (who was heavily involved with Defcon, T.Wells' only other hip hop offering) they were asked to take over regular warm up slots for the Defcon nights run by Natty & Dwella in Tunny. During 2004 they appeared on stage alongside many big UK acts, including Foreign Beggars, Manage, Skinnyman, Tommy Evans, Blade and Jehst. Through doing this, they met the DJ who was later to become the guy they would work with on pretty much all of their future music. DJ Catch was a Defcon resident and when these boyz came to the stage, he recognised the raw talent they held and, after becoming good friends, they decided to work together to create some of the best Hip Hop the UK had ever heard. And they did.
Digit & Tubz were working with Chameleon Records producer Edixion at this point, mainly making tracks for the Chameleon Records MixTape Vol. 1 (released Jan 2005) but also concentrating on running their own record shop - Chameleon Sounds. Aswell as a being the best record shop in town, it was also home to the studio which would put Sunny Tunny on the map. It was here that the idea for the label came along. Digit wanted to get his music heard and decided the best way to do that would be to utilise his knowledge of the scene and his skills to own and manage a music label. Baggy Flag Records.
In the beginning of 2005, work began on the first MixTape to be released on Baggy Flag with local emcees such as Parody, Tomberculosis, Skank, Dubz, Reklas and Mr Morpheus (using the name Shadow at that point) all stepping to the mic to spit some rhymes for the cause. It dropped in April that year and caused a stir of appreciation through the Hip Hop headz of T.Wells, Tonbridge and surrounding areas. Although an old style mixtape of rappin over famous beats, there were a few tracks included produced by Edixion, to keep the link between the two biggest labels in the South East strong. Happy Times was one of those tracks and this was the first ever recorded by Digit & Tubz. It's an absolute classic and everyone needs it in their life! To hear it, go to Digits own myspace.
The release of this mixtape spawned many offers to come and guest at shows across the south east; including an all day Hip Hop event in Maidstone and also the River Festival held at the same place a month later. That was an all day event of graf competitions, live music and b-boy showcases and Digit, Tubz, Parody and Catch finished off the night with the headlining set. Needless to say, they smashed it. A show at the Loft nightclub followed soon after and they also played again at this years River Festival, alongside the Chameleon collective.
They then set off on a spree of local shows, at the legendary Forum, giving something back to the town who had given them so much support in the first place and invited guest acts such as 12" Matter, Dr Syntax, DJ ASIF and Koaste (to name a few) down to give the hip hop headz of tunny a chance to see some other promising UK talent in their own town.
