Experimental Shortcuts are an exciting young band based in Killybegs with tons of potential. The lads have already shared the stage with acts including The Revs, Waterboys and Gerry Fish. The Donegal Post talks to the promising Experimental Shortcuts.
Who all is in the band?
Ciaran McBrearty – vocals, Jamie Ratcliffe – guitar, Evan Bourke – drums and Owen Boyle on bass.
Where did you get your name from?
We got lost in Dublin one time, going to an Aslan gig and Jamie had the bright idea to try some ‘experimental shortcuts’.
What are your influences?
Rory Gallagher, Led Zepplin, Jimi Hendrix and the Chilli Peppers.
Ciaran – You don’t want to know my influences!
How would you describe your sound?
Like the soundtrack to a bad porn
What has been your highlight to date?
Evan – It was really cool playing support to The Revs in An Grianan.
Jamie – Playing in the Black Box in Galway as part of Blast was great.
Owen – Supporting the likes of Gerry Fish and The Waterboys was brilliant too.
What does the future hold?
Evan - We hope to practice and do a bit of touring.
Jamie – We have to do it before we’re 27 though!
Ciaran – Get a van too.
Favourite colour? Aluminous black.
Favourite smell? Cheese cake, Lemon obviously! Or Evan after a gig.
Favourite Girls Aloud member? The red head for trying.
Oasis or Blur? Oasis, but Graham Coxon’s solo stuff is great.
Mr T or the Fonz? You can’t pick between the two!
Boxers or briefs? Boxers. Jamie – neither!
Take That or Boyzone? Boyzone, supporting the Irish!
Favourite football team? You’re asking the wrong boys! Dream Team or Port Vale…
Who would you most like to meet? Socky from the Den.
First person you would invite to a party? Jesus, Disco Stu and Jumangi.
Last person you would invite to a party? Bush, Robbie Williams and Christina Aguilera.
Best song ever? Where’s me jumper?
Beatles or Rolling Stones? Beatles (After a lengthily discussion).
One word on Scissor Sisters? Spice.
Most annoying song ever? National Express by Devine Comedy. The Birdie Song.
Jamie – No not the Birdie Song, I know the whole dance!
Favourite ice-cream flavour? Neapolitan, the one with the three flavours.
Kit Kat, a biscuit or bar? Bar
One word on Bono? Spacer! He’s a broom-stick!
What came first, the chicken or the egg? Evan – I actually have a theory on that. It’s hard to explain, but basically it was a half-assed chicken (through evolution and mix breeding) then the egg.
We would collectively like to make a statement, that we are holding Bruce for ransom! For further information on Experimental Shortcuts, check out their Bebo page http://expsband.bebo.com or their myspace: www.myspace.com/experimentalshortcut...
