  • BIDWILL RIOT 2007

    AS many as 80 youths from around Sydney's western suburbs were allegedly recruited to join a street battle between two warring families at a troubled housing estate over the weekend.

    Police said they were investigating reports that members of one of the families involved in the fight on Saturday night at the Bidwill estate, near Mount Druitt, brought in supporters from suburbs including Blacktown and Doonside.

    A total of 21 youths, ranging in age from 16 to 24 years and including four minors, were arrested and charged with riot offences after clashing twice in less than two hours.

    Police were called to the corner of Tongariro Terrace and Carlisle Avenue at 9pm on Saturday after 60 to 80 youths armed with bottles and wooden posts started to gather behind the Bidwill Hotel.

    They retreated to two houses within 100m of each other after police arrived, but at 10.30pm were back at the intersection throwing rocks and bottles at each other.

    Police moved in and arrested 19 who were fleeing to a house on Tongariro Terrace. Two more were arrested on existing warrant offences when a house in Carlisle Avenue was searched early yesterday morning.

    Fifteen of the 19 men arrested at the Tongariro Avenue house lived in Blacktown-Doonside area, with police investigating the possibility they were recruited to join the fight by the house's occupant, who previously lived in their area.

    Mount Druitt police chief inspector Guy Haberley said police found a cache of weapons at the Carlisle Avenue house, including baseball bats, knives, machetes, bottles, hammers and metal poles that had been "secreted for easy access at entry and exit points".

    "It appears they were getting ready for some kind of war," he said.
