Me, Myself, and I
For too long biologists like myself have avoided the pursuit of academic advancement by NOT sticking things inside their own bodies or seeing what it would be like to infect themselves with a particularly virulent strains of ebola. But i am here to change that (well, maybe no the ebola), but i have a good track record of doing crazy experiments on my own body. So if you want to find out why i let a tapeworm grow inside my guts or how long a grub can survive inside my leg then stay tuned peoples.

  • Back to NYC

Howdy folks. I am back in the Big Apple again after my traumatic but seriously fun travels around the world. I would tell you all about it here but I am very tired and you can read about the trip from my previous entries. I have also uploaded stuff to my YouTube pages and facebook etc so you can check them out also. I am glad to say that the new experiment is still going very well and the piece of vine in my arm made it back to the USA (and through customs!). So I am going to be using my Justin.tv account to broadcast live what happens to it over the next few weeks or so. Because I am going to be broadcasting live most days I am probably going to stop blogging quite so much as you will be able to follow everything I am doing from my own apartment anyways. I have so much work to catch up on that you can be guaranteed I will be sat at my desk in front of the computer most days (and nights). So come say hello to me and my new viney friend if you have time. See you there. PS. Angelface, I know you’ll be watching ;0)

  • Extreme Pain Brings Joy

Today was a strange day. A very, very strange day. You may recall that a while back I was looking for a new experiment to subject my body too having already grown a tapeworm in my gut, a Bot fly in my leg, gone without sunlight etc. As you know, I was struggling to come up with anything new to do… …until today that is when good lady fortune smiled on me once again, kind of...

Let me explain, Jemma and I were out at a place outside of the town of Coba, an ancient Mayan temple. I dragged Jemma there because I had heard there were species of plants specific to that area that had not yet been documented. This was like a moth to a flame for me of course. Having dragged Jemma through a near impossibly overgrown dirt track we eventually stumbled on the temple. Sure enough it was covered from head to toe in all kinds of interesting flaura and fauna. I immediately set about exploring while Jemma fell asleep somewhat disrespectfully on what appeared to be an ancient sacrificial alter. As I set about my exploration it wasn't long before I found myself up to my waist in a species of vine which I didn't really recognize. It seemed to be some type of dodder vine or cuscuta or something but I couldn't be sure. Excited that I may have discovered a new species I tried to cut a piece off with my knife. When I went to grab the piece my hand got caught in the surrounding vines causing me to impulsively yank my arm to get it free. This was a mistake as I managed to shred my entire forearm right up to the elbow. Blood everywhere. Gross. However, believe it or not there was an upside to all of this in that a tiny piece of the vine stuck inside the flesh of my arm. How can this possibly be an upside I hear you cry? It is an upside because this piece of vine in my arm is going to be my next experiment. The vine, if it is indeed a strain of dodder (strangleweed) then it is parasitic in nature meaning it can grow inside other organisms. Technically this means that with some care and under the right conditions the vine could continue to grow inside my arm. How cool is that? Not quite sure if it will work or not but I am going to blog what happens and I may even do the live webcam thing I did once before so all you guys can log on to see if it has survived being in me or not. I just it doesn't get infected though otherwise I will have to abort the experiment ASAP (see Bot fly in leg experiment). I cleaned the wound as best I could without damaging the vine so hopefully it should be okay. Anyways, stay tuned and we'll see what happens!!

  • Exploration

It would be a fair assumption that most Cancun vacations are products of the media. Let me clarify that; what I meant to say is that Cancun is beaches and night clubs and water sports and everything of and under the sun. There isn’t necessarily anything inaccurate about that definition, but it is vague and lacks some of the oldest attractions that predate the city’s existence. I’m speaking of the cenotes, and the subtlety of cross-water Isla Mujeres, and—what serves as Cancun’s foundation—the remaining vestiges of the Mayan civilization.
The structures still survive; certainly not all of them or in their entirety, but a handful of Mayan sites remain open to tours and without all of the tacky connotation. There are no gift shops at the exits. The stone is aged 900 years. Loudspeakers are not hanging from the ceilings to guide the tour and there are no diners littering the premises. These sites have only spoiled by the decaying effects of time.
If you can recall anything about Mayan history or culture from high school history class, then you are lucky. I cannot. All of what I remember lies in two facts; that they were the last civilization to be conquered and that the Maya, as a tribe, once existed. Should that negate every word here on out? No. Does this make me any less credible? Only if I were a historian. But I claim no such thing. I am just another tourist that discovered a part of Cancun the commercials fail to show. To tell the truth I am as interested if not even slightly more interested in what surrounds these ancient monuments. The wealth of plant life is phenomenal and I have already documented several species which I have never seen before but which I intend to research when I get back home. Anyways, overall it has been awesome and tomorrow Jemma and I are going to go off the beaten track a bit and head down to a place just outside Coba which is meant to be untouched. Hopefully there will be some interesting species to cast my biology eye over when I’m there.
