War. It changes everything.
Me, Myself, and I

I'm gonna play your game,
I wanna play with fire.
I want to breathe your air,
Baby, gonna take you there.
If you lay your cards on the table,
I'll lay my love on the line...
'Till you're mine.
- Stand Up, Def Leppard

Turn the tide in from the fallen,
Waiting to rise up again.
I can feel it in my blood,
I hold the future in my hand.
Leave your fear of love behind,
Let your dreaming be your guide.
If you seek then you shall find.
I believe in fairytales,
And serendipitous encounters.
- Dreamer, Elizaveta

You can't fill your cup until you empty all it has.
You can't understand what lays ahead,
If you don't understand the past.
You'll never learn to fly now, 'Til you're standing at the cliff.
And you can't truly love until you've given up on it.
- Satellite, Rise Against

That lopsided smirk was punctuated with a nod. "Yes. My best behavior..at the time. My 'best' is a bit better now that I've grown up a bit, afterall. Though I don't think I can ever be any less than a scoundrel anyway" He chuckled and rolled his shoulders into a brief shrug. He listened as she spoke of her regrets & nodded when she'd concluded. "Your optimism is a good quality. I'd hate for you to lose that." He laughed when she talked about not being an old maid "You? An old maid? No I don't think that will ever be your problem" her barbed joke about wrinkles earned her a point in her direction "watch it now. I've earned these crows feet damnit" A smirk followed, because he wasn't really bothered by the laugh lines. Who would have thought he would ever have -those-?! He gave a nod and stood; offering her a hand up from the couch after crossing the short distance. "Lunch with a friend sounds like a good way to spend the afternoon. Where to?"

He chuckled and shook his head a little. "You mostly saw me on my best behavior, save for once or twice. The place I come from is not really a place of the sun or things wholesome." He offered a bit of a shrug of his own, watching as she looked at the portraits around the room. He took a moment to look at them, himself, his gaze softening for each picture.. his family had kept him going and given him reason to live .. to claw back from the void. Her musings on regret brought him back from his reverie. "Spoken as if you have some on your mind. I hope you find the way to pick up the reins, Shar. You're right there.. you can wallow in it and let it consume your soul or you can just find what means something to you...

-- focus on that and move forward. Though...as much as we'd like to think the life of future regrets is possible, we can't promise ourselves 'never' because you never know. BUt trying.. striving. That is the beauty of it and what makes you feel alive." When did Shard start waxing philosophical?! Largely from all the hours of solitary introspection. He couldn't help but grin a bit at her expression when he mentioned he had teenagers. "Shar.. you do know about the tendency of Montague children to age quickly in times of war or dangerous crisis yes? There've been a few rounds of kids that it's affected in my time here. You likely haven't been gone as long as the surprise on your face just had you thinking." He shook his head a little. "A good while but not aeons" He offered a bit of a smirk. "At least I can tease Jehovah that he graduated to 'grandpa' before I did. --

-- Though hair dye? Hm. I am not sure about that. If I start getting the streaks from the temples I might just leave them." He laughed then though sobering somewhat with her next assertion and the bite beneath it. "I cannot think but that I ended up on the right path, even if part of my journey was shorter that I would have liked it to be. You'll find the right direction." she looked like she'd slipped into a moment of reflection, so he fell silent for short while. Her reaction when he spoke Pheobe's name wasn't something missed but given the discussion on the whole, he felt no need to point it out. A smile, if a little lopsided, found its way across his features. "Thanks Shar. I am happy.. sometimes it's a little bittersweet but overall..I am. You will be too. I mean.. for a while there I thought I was destined for something entirely different - definitely not a family.. and now I have family coming out of my ears." There was a bit of a look of wonder in his expression.

The posture that she'd chosen to take as she'd sat in the chair had been curious, all curled on herself with head rested on her propped-up hands. A mahogany brow arched, though to her it might not be clear why. That old lopsided smirk appeared before long, though as she mentioned the age old idiom about eyes and the soul. "I've always found that phrase amusing, considering my own eyes and what meanings any who cared to guess at might come up with. Whether it's my soul is bathed in flames or that it must mean I am an infernal creature..

all the way to it must mean I am surely damned. I get a kick out of those. Any who say that just simply don't know the meaning of the term" A chuckle followed. He shook his head a little to her assertion that she wished she could have been around to help during the various conflicts. "Don't weigh yourself down with unnecessary regret, Shar. As much as I am a fan of chaos, things do tend to happen for a reason, as cliche as it sounds." He shrugged a little though to the notion that he'd retained humanity - he really never had that, but he'd grown into a more well-rounded person rather than the devil-may-care playboy he'd been when she first knew him. He outright laughed when she called him on looking haggard from being a parent. "Teenagers. Four teenagers...three girls at that. I expect to sprout gray any day now."

He flashed that familiar smirk. He was glad to see her uncurling to relax back into the couch, though what came next, delivered with such unwavering gaze. Caused him to blink a bit. "I don't see why we couldn't continue to be friends, Shar." The rest gave him a bit of pause, though she had been frank with him, and he felt he could not be less. "I wasn't exactly fair to you back then, consumed with the pursuit of someone unattainable. I had you.. on some sort of pedestal I think. Part of me wanted to corrupt you and the other part of me - which ended up winning - wanted to preserve your innocence, delusional as it was. We can't stay innocent forever - everyone changes. We experience something that affects us profoundly. I hadn't begun to make that journey for myself then - not before you went to Hunter." Of course that was essentially where their paths had diverged. He managed a smile, albeit slightly tinged with sadness.

"I was happy... I am now." When she stood to look at the pictures, his gaze followed and he spoke as she viewed them. "That's Connor and Sienna, my first set of twins.. then the other two girls.. that's Riona there and then Taegan. The pale blonde with Connor is Scarlette, his girlfriend." When she got to the last picture he was grinning ear to ear again. "That's Pheobe MacNamara we've been seeing each other for a little while now." There was obvious affection in his voice when he spoke of her. She was indeed a challenge he'd been determined to rise to - though he was careful in his phrasing. If he hadn't yet said such words to her in person, he could hardly admit to such aloud, even to an old friend. Of course the last name would likely ring a bell. Shard didn't feel it necessary to 'name drop' the exact relation immediately.

He was a lesser empath than his mother was, and was successfully able to essentially flick that switch off as he needed to, whereas she could not. However, skin contact stripped away some of these barriers he'd built to keep everyone else's baggage at bay. He felt the swirl of emotion around her and even before she'd fully begun to remove her hand from his cheek he was pulling back on his own. His expression was pleasant but slightly guarded.--

-- It was simply a reaction he couldn't help. A sweeping motion with one hand as he gestured towards one of the seating options that formed a horseshoe around the massive hearth. "No need for apologies, Shar. Everyone has their own path to take, and sometimes those diverge. Have a seat?" He waited for her to choose somewhere to settle, or not, as she liked - either way once her choice was made, he took a seat in a chair near the fire, hands lacing together in his lap. He was mulling over her admission that he was 'near and dear' yet after all this time and after everything that had happened. Though, he supposed nostalgia could paint such a picture. He exhaled softly. He was a more cynical being than he used to be, slightly harder around the edges than the carefree self she'd once known. Her flattery did earn her a lopsided smirk. "Your new look suits you. I'd almost not recognized you, but your eyes haven't changed." --

--That was neither here nor there. Hands parted to shift his arms to the armrests of the highbacked chair. "War...always something unpleasant. We've had a few.. around here. Messy business." Lids closed over molten hues momentarily as he did his best to not let the price of such weigh in his gaze. "I'm well. Four children, two sets of twins..they're what keep me going when things have been dicey." He chuckled. Him? With kids? Who would have ever pictured him as a responsible-parent-type?! He sombered a little at her last statement regarding her expectations of a less than warm welcome. "To be honest, Sharula, if my wife were still alive, you likely would have had a less than hospitable reaction from her. She had it in her head you were after me.. in spite of my assurances we were friends. I don't know why she felt so strongly but often times when it comes to the love of one's mate, the irrational can seem rational.--

-- She passed with the birth of our youngest daughters.. teens now, thanks to the hijinks of their maternal grandfather. If only I could kill him as permanently as my own father..it would be better for us all, but alas" He shrugged slightly. "I think my boy might just be getting engaged soon and one of my godchildren is due to be married this week, actually. So there are happy events to be focused on at least." He chuckled. "Well if Connor gets off the stick" He gestured around at some of the various pictures dotting the surfaces of the great room. "They're all at school right now, but I've got pictures." All four children were represented as well as a group portrait of what must be his late wife with shard and the two eldest. And yet there was another portrait with Shard and a redhead that decidedly wasn't the same woman from the family portrait.

He didn't immediately coil his aura back into himself, as he was testing the proverbial waters to make sure that it was really Sharula. It'd been so long, he'd almost for a moment forgotten that she'd changed from the doe-eyed near-innocent that he'd first come to know so long ago. Yet though some of her had changed a good deal, the core of her had not, nor had her scent, really. By the time she began to move in his direction, he had tucked most of what he had unleashed away behind his carefully wrought shields - yet some chaos energy continued to crackle around him - once so much chaos was unleashed, it was impossible to contain it all. Such was the nature of chaos in its essence - even if you ruled a chaos plane in absentia. He looked the same as he did before, and yet, immensely different.

    - His gaze held all the same fire and he stood just as tall and broad of shoulder but his general demeanor was more guarded than the carefree and devilish rogue she'd known. There was something more solid about him like Atlas had shrugged off the world a few times onto his shoulders and he'd survived to pass it back. He had only a moment's further hesitation before he moved to meet her in the middle of the room. His wife had some irrational jealous dislike of Shar before - but it didn't matter now. He was fairly certain that his current interest had no such insecurities. He leaned over to wrap arms around her in a brief embrace. "It's good to see you. It'd been so long since I'd heard from you I was beginning to wonder." He pulled back then, his features quirking into the same lopsided smile he'd always had. "This is a surprise. How have you been?"

Shard was actually upstairs when he felt the breach of his wards. Quite interesting. He was in his study, poring over a tome. It was the time of day that all of the kids were off at school. He frowned, sliding the bookmark in place and stepping from the room to head down to the greatroom. It was faster than going up to the tower where he had his scrying table. Why not just deal with whoever or whatever it was and be done with it, right? He began to drop his shields a bit as he walked down the stairs, letting a roiling miasma of dark and chaotic energy preceed him, in hopes it would discourage whoever - from doing anything stupid. He'd about had it with home invasions -

    - of course it'd only been once but it had resulted in the first death of his mate and kidnapping of one of his kids so he tended to be a little touchy. Though, once he stepped into the room through the massive double doors, eyes flaring brightly, he just had to stand there a moment, staring, brows furrowing after a moment. Was this a trick? "Sh...Sharula?"

Adam was gone for a while. No word to anyone, and even when he took his leave from the Ministry of Magic he gave no reason as to why even to Hunter. Something just seemed to be bothering him on many levels. In the past few days before he was distant, distracted... but the day he left there was obviously something more to it. Her words hit him and he nodded to himself before calling her back.

"Just tell me the place. Sorry I haven't been around... My..." There was a pause, as he heard his voice crack and him look around before he tried again, "My mother was murdered. Connections seem to be around previous Kiss attacks, but my father thinks it links back to something further than that..." He seemed torn up but finally he stopped talking about the situation as if it was hard to. "Just say where, I'll be over soon."
