They call themselves BGF. It stands for Black Gorilla Family. It's a local gang that has hundreds of members anywhere from places like Columbus to New Hope.

"It's definitely frightening that it's going on here in our community," said Willie Sanders.

Sanders counsels youth from several schools in the area every day.

"We'll it's definitely very serious in this area and we cannot as a community overlook it and kind of brush it under the rug, that there are real gangs in this community," said Sanders.

Most of the members are attending your local high schools. When we went to Bebo, we found several pictures of youth holding up what police are calling gang symbols.

Columbus police Chief Joe St. John says some of the members are innocent people getting caught up in the wrong crowd.

"Because they're affiliated with people who necessarily didn't care about them or didn't care about society, they're now pulled in the middle of it, they're being charged as felons and their lives are ruined," said Chief Joe St. John.

Experts say a lot of gangs are in areas that have a military base and in places where families are averaging an income of less than 26-thousand dollars a year; that's why counselors say parents need to wake up and know what's going on in their town.

"The kids want to belong, so they'll participate in any criminal behavior or anything that they can to be a part of this gang," Sanders added.

So how do you keep the kids out of gangs? Sanders says it's by having more after school programs for youth, that way they'll stay in school and not behind bars.

According to the office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention, gangs are also very prevalent in areas that have major universities.
