Booby Traps255 weeks ago

During the Vietnam War, booby traps proved to be a very effective way of picking off enemy targets- mostly used by the VC. The VC would plant booby traps everywhere and they proved deadley in the jungles. Some forms of booby traps used by the VC included these following methods- poisonous snakes would be placed inside a hole in the ground and a hatch door would be put over the hole. A G.I walking by would see the hatch and would think that its a hatch leading to an NVA or VC underground tunnel system, but when he or they would open it, one of them would be bitten by the snake. Of the estimated 46,000 American KIA in Vietnam, 10,000 died from Non-combat causes, so this means that they had died from malaria, snake bites etc. So this method of putting the snake in a hole in the ground must've been pretty effective. The VC would also booby trap their underground tunnels when American 'Tunnel Rats" went in after them. These booby traps were normally explosives and trip wire. Another common booby used by the VC was the method of putting wooden or metal spikes into a hole and grass was placed over the hole covering it and the soldier would fall through it. Another similar, but far deadlier one was a trip wire which resulted in a pad of wooden spikes flying up from the ground and impaling the G.I if he walked over it. The Americans however did get there own back on the VC for the loss of their buddies to these crude traps. The VC never had a lot to eat, and were always stealing G.I ration tins, so the G.I's would deliberately leave behind ration tins for the VC, but they were booby trapped with explosives which would blow up in the VC's face, resulting in serious injury and the VC didn't have proper doctors or medical supplies so this wounded comrade would be a major blow to morale. The Americans also, upon finding AK-47s etc. on trials which were hidden for VC members to pick up on the way to an ambush, would sabotage the guns, so they would blow up in the faces of the VC, causing more morale blows and resulting in the VC no longer trusting their weapons.
