|As a girl's name, Sharon is quite new and was unknown before the 20th century. However, the word itself is very old and can be found in the Bible, in the Old Testament ("I am the Rose of Sharon, and the lily of the valleys..." - Song of Solomon.) There are two plants with the name rose of Sharon; a yellow shrub, hypericum, and a purple hibiscus flower.|
The plant name probably drives from the Sharon area in Western Central Israel, a fertile plain known for its citrus fruits. In Hebrew Saron (pronounced sha-RON) is a surname based on place, rather than a given name (as in former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.)
John Steinbeck gave the name Rose of Sharon to a character in his best selling novel "The Grapes of Wrath" whcih may have helped to make the name more popular in the 20th century. It was very well known in the 2nd half of the century, but its use has declined since.
